On behalf of the National IDS office and board of directors, it is with great sadness to let you know the passing of Dot Greenlee. Dot was the past President of the Dallas/Fort Worth Chapter and worked tirelessly with Dwell with Dignity and Jonathan's place, part of their chapter charity projects. Under her leadership, the Dallas chapter won their first chapter of the year award. Dot had her own business, Dorothy Greenlee Designs, in Dallas, Texas, and was recently named IDS National Designer of the Year in the Dining Room category in April. Our sincere condolences to her family, friends, clients and fellow IDS members. Besides Dot's work ethic, she will be missed for her genuine personality and friendly smile. Dot, you will be greatly missed.
Jan Cregier
IDS National Board of Directors, President

“Christmas at Designers’ Homes Across America,” available in bookstores since August 28, 2016, features the home of Little Rock interior designer Shayla Copas. Her beautiful living room graces the cover of this unique 256-page book. Also featured, are homes of 22 leading designers, including Christopher Radko (of vintage ornament fame) and Joe Ruggiero (host of HGTV’s Homes Across America). Almost 400 color images treat readers to dazzling holiday visions usually seen only by family and friends. “I am honored to be included among so many talented designer across our nation”, Copas said. “I am looking forward to the launch party which will take place at the Governor’s Mansion on November 1, 2016 at 6 pm. That night a portion of the proceeds from the sale of the book will be given to Children’s Advocacy Centers of Arkansas. We are pleased that Wordsworth in the Heights and At Home in Arkansas has partnered with us to promote the book and help the CAC’s.”
Readers of “Christmas at Designers’ Homes Across America “ will be inspired by decorating strategies that include unique color schemes which venture from traditional red and green to soft palettes of blues and golds. They will note Shayla’s skill for unifying exterior and interior decor. Shayla and other designers reveal personal preferences (lots or little glam, vintage or contemporary ornaments, less-is-more or more-is-much-better philosophies). An Architectural Digest Top 100 designer shares her own ingenious d-i-y recycling of broken ornaments. Many share tips for decorating the tree and caring for much-loved ornaments. All graciously share family holiday rituals and favorite Christmas traditions.

Faux fur: It's so cozy. It's so welcoming. And right now, it's on its way to becoming a toasty hot interior design trend.
As the luscious material trends on the runway this fall, interior designers say it's also appearing more and more in homes. Why? As the design world takes a turn from cold contemporary to cozy opulence, designers use it for its luxurious yet inviting nature.

There’s been a sea change in the design world over the last few years when it comes to neutrals. Taupes, khakis, and other forms of beige have fallen to the wayside in favor of a new favorite tone: gray. With the calmness of a blue, warmth of a tan, and subtlety of a cream, gray is a versatile color that works well in both traditional spaces and über-modern ones, and is as useful as the backdrop to an eclectically outfitted home as it is the base for a minimal one. But with infinite shades to choose from, it can be hard to find the right hue. AD asked three designers for their top dos and don’ts when it comes to using gray.

Bigger is better. You've heard this maxim before, but it's never been more true than when it comes to interior design trends in windows and doors. Large, glass-paneled doors, measuring up to 60 feet tall and beyond 45 feet wide, are becoming the popular choice for homeowners. This expansive display of glass is particularly common on the West Coast and in mountain areas where blending outdoor and indoor living spaces makes sense. "These go beyond regular patio doors," says Jon Phelps, public relations and brand content manager at Andersen Windows, a leader in the industry for over 110 years. "You’re literally opening up the side of your house."

Why is this a question that seems never to go away? Even among members of the profession, the debate over what we call ourselves seems to be a source of turmoil. The fact is many of us who are practicing the art of interior design are both. Interior decoration or décor has been around as long as humans have been seeking shelter. So why is decorator vs. designer such a big deal? Maybe because of how each title is perceived.

Traditional design wisdom says dark walls make a space seem smaller. We’ve never been believers in following rules just because they’re rules, but even we can admit that blue can shrink a room when wielded incorrectly.
Do it right, however, and your home won’t look like it was zapped by the laser beam from "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids." Because no man should be taking style cues from Rick Moranis.
Blue can be used to create a clean and serene space.
