We are thrilled to have almost 30 IDS members and their guests here in Paris with us! How exciting is it to get to travel abroad with fellow IDS designers from all over the country?! Most of our crew arrived in Paris this morning (Thursday). We have spent the day walking around the city, sampling french foods, and seeing the sights along the Seine River.

We can now confirm: the hotel breakfast is truly amazing. What could be better than French breads, cheeses, and pastries for breakfast?! We are really eating like royalty this week. Our staff (Executive Director, Jenny Cano, and Marketing & Communications Manager, Maddie Landers) spent part of the day scoping out the Maison & Objet show. We saw so many amazing trends, and look forward to welcoming the group tomorrow at the show. We will begin the day with a welcome breakfast, hosted by Maison&Objet and WantedDesign Group. Here's a preview of what we discovered...

Wow, today was an amazing day! Our group spent the majority of our time today at the Maison&Objet show - it's the reason we're here, after all. We saw lots of amazing things at Maison&Objet. Everyone agreed that this show is much different from those in the US that we are used to. The show was very easy to navigate - the trick was following what they call the "red carpet" - which is literally a red strip of carpet that will help you wind around all of the halls.

Bonjour from Paris! Today was our last official day as a group and we soaked up every minute. Today's highlight (and possibly the highlight from the whole trip) was our journey through the Paris Flea Markets. The Paris Flea Markets have been around for almost a century. They cover over 20 acres and consist of 11 different markets. They receive between 120,000 and 180,000 visitors each weekend! These are not your typical flea markets - many booths are full of vintage Channel, beautiful antiques, and one-of-a-kind artwork.

Richard N. Pollack writes: Interior designers and architects learn a great deal about design, art history, problem solving and critical thinking in school. What we don't learn is how to practice our chosen profession.
As an abject lesson, I received my Bachelor of Architecture from Pratt Institute and never even had a formal drafting class — let alone business, finance, human resources or marketing classes.

In recent years, feminine decor styles have dominated the market. From millennial pink to palm leaf prints and statement art (Live. Laugh. Why?), many current trends are becoming just a bit tired. But now, the pendulum is starting to swing the other way. Clean, modern looks, inspired by men's fashion, are making a comeback.
However, don't be fooled. This is nothing like the modern looks of the late '90s and early aughts.

Building Design + Construction
No one sets out to make an ugly building. However, this is often the result — a walk of any size in any place shows building after building that did not start where it seems to have ended up. By conforming to mediocre construction standards and allowing the tools of the digital age to limit the range of what is possible, the industry has created an environment where what is designed is seldom what is built.

Companies with high concentrations of knowledge workers have been gravitating toward activity-based work environments in recent years to address employees' complaints about the shortcomings of open-plan office spaces. Although employee response has been generally favorable, recent research indicates that ABWs can present their own set of problems if not carefully designed.

If your company is in the market for an office upgrade, you've come to the right place. This year's World's Coolest Offices package has something for everyone, whether you draw your inspiration from converted shipbuilding facilities or from the wacky shapes and colors of Barcelona's famous Gaudi buildings. Inc. took a look at offices completed since the beginning of last year, and the resulting list proves that tech companies aren't the only ones who have a kick-ass headquarters.

Fall is a time when many people turn their attention to the inside of their home.
"Back-to-school time has always meant new beginnings to me — a fresh start. The urge to freshen things up and change things around my home is strong as the days get shorter and cooler," said Julie Deuble, lead designer at Sierra Unlimited Construction and president of the Interior Design Association of Western New York.
