We are thrilled to have almost 30 IDS members and their guests here in Paris with us! How exciting is it to get to travel abroad with fellow IDS designers from all over the country?! Most of our crew arrived in Paris this morning (Thursday). We have spent the day walking around the city, sampling french foods, and seeing the sights along the Seine River.

We can now confirm: the hotel breakfast is truly amazing. What could be better than French breads, cheeses, and pastries for breakfast?! We are really eating like royalty this week. Our staff (Executive Director, Jenny Cano, and Marketing & Communications Manager, Maddie Landers) spent part of the day scoping out the Maison & Objet show. We saw so many amazing trends, and look forward to welcoming the group tomorrow at the show. We will begin the day with a welcome breakfast, hosted by Maison&Objet and WantedDesign Group. Here's a preview of what we discovered...

Wow, today was an amazing day! Our group spent the majority of our time today at the Maison&Objet show - it's the reason we're here, after all. We saw lots of amazing things at Maison&Objet. Everyone agreed that this show is much different from those in the US that we are used to. The show was very easy to navigate - the trick was following what they call the "red carpet" - which is literally a red strip of carpet that will help you wind around all of the halls.

Bonjour from Paris! Today was our last official day as a group and we soaked up every minute. Today's highlight (and possibly the highlight from the whole trip) was our journey through the Paris Flea Markets. The Paris Flea Markets have been around for almost a century. They cover over 20 acres and consist of 11 different markets. They receive between 120,000 and 180,000 visitors each weekend! These are not your typical flea markets - many booths are full of vintage Channel, beautiful antiques, and one-of-a-kind artwork.

Two inevitable trends will transform the interior design industry in the coming decade. One is the rise of the millennial client. The other is the maturing of e-commerce. These trends are inextricably linked. Designers who want to remain competitive in this changing market will need to innovate their marketing and business processes to attract and retain these clients.

In fashion, it's replaced black as the new dress-up color. And it's riding a wave of popularity into home decor, too. What's the buzz about? The color blue. And while all blues, from baby to sky, are popular, it's the deep, inky ones that are exciting home decorators.

Now in its 15th year, IDS Vancouver was definitely a show for thinkers and visionaries, with the entrance feature, A Sense of Place, designed by the hugely talented London-based artist, designer and illustrator Emily Forgot in collaboration with Benjamin Moore. Inspired by the work of Canadian modernism and architects such as Arthur Erickson and Ronald Thom, the installation included 14 original artworks in colors ranging pastel pink to vibrant green. "They're quite abstract," says Forgot. "So you're not really meant to be able to pinpoint what you're looking at."

In some homes, gone are the days when a plaid cushion tossed in a corner seemed just fine for a dog. "Dogs and cats are no longer sleeping in mud rooms or outside. They're in the family den and they're full-fledged family members," says Martha Stewart Living's Editor in Chief, Elizabeth Graves. "People refer to themselves as pet 'parents,' not 'owners,' and they treat their pets accordingly."

In her 40 years designing for corporate commercial spaces, Joyce Fownes has seen commercial interior design evolve both in its technology and its thoughtful approach. Drawing by hand with no 3-D tools available, designers' ability to "visualize architecturally was very limited," Fownes said. Today, Fownes said designers have to understand who the client is and what they do.

Have you ever heard of upcycling? It simply means reusing an object or a material in a way that creates a new value. (Think reupholstering an old chair or turning some sea glass you found on the beach into a piece of art.) While recycling requires breaking something down before it can be built up again, upcycling skips that energy-intensive process altogether.
