Making it as a small-business owner is tough. The oft-repeated survival statistics: Only about a third of startups survive to celebrate their 10th anniversary, according to U.S. Census Bureau and Labor Department data, and only a quarter last until their 15th. There are many ways to increase your company's survival odds, but one of the easiest is to control your use of credit-card debt. Too often, entrepreneurs don't make the best use of their accounts and end up hurting their businesses. Here are seven of the most common credit-card slip-ups to avoid.

In these slower times, it is not enough to base new business solely on referrals. Marketing is key to the consistent generation of business a successful design firm needs. When designers get busy, marketing tends to get put on the backburner for more immediate tasks. However, marketing should take high priority or you may find yourself running out of work. This is in fact, one of the biggest mistakes design firms make; only marketing when they are slow. If you track your time accurately, you will find that your business cycles respond to your activity cycles. If you're marketing now, it may take months to see the results.

Canadian concert pianist Ryo Yanagitani's taxi entered through Evermay's imposing iron gates, passed by the three-bedroom gatehouse and drove around the graceful circular driveway. He finally arrived in the granite cobblestone courtyard, built around a gently bubbling black marble fluted fountain. Though he had Googled "Evermay mansion" before coming, Yanagitani was stunned when he beheld the commanding 211-year-old brick Georgetown manor. "Words fail to describe how I felt when I pulled up to the house in the cab," Yanagitani says. "It just blew my mind."

The Small Business Administration has formalized a program that allows contracting officers to set aside procurements for woman-owned small businesses, but the move to award more contracts is likely to be slow. The SBA implemented the program in April 2011, designating set-asides for procurements in industries in which woman-owned small businesses are significantly underrepresented. There is a wide range of sectors, but the big-spending IT and professional services industries aren't included.
