Nate Berkus Renovates His Manhattan, NY, Duplex
Architectural Digest    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Quick changes are second nature to interior decorator Nate Berkus. As the longtime home-makeover maven on The Oprah Winfrey Show and later host of his own television program, he has mastered the art of creating elegant, welcoming rooms in seemingly no time at all. (Just consider, as evidence of his abilities, the uproarious audience applause, tears of joy, and effusive Winfrey whoops that greeted his projects upon their unveiling.) In the case of his Manhattan duplex, the designer — true to form — executed one of his hallmark speedy transformations, with chic results that are a thoughtful reflection of his past. More

The Boston Globe    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When the economy tanked in 2008, homeowners hit the pause button on furniture purchases and home renovations. They stood back, watched their savings and retirement accounts take a roller-coaster ride, and generally stopped investing in home decor. Nearly five years later, Julie Rogowski, vice president and general manager of the Boston Design Center, says that sentiment finally may be turning an important and well-decorated corner. More

Small Businesses Are Finding An Unlikely Banker: Amazon
The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
With its foray into commercial lending, 18-year-old Inc. is looking to help sellers obtain cash more quickly than they might otherwise from a bank or other traditional lender, an Amazon spokesman said. "Our goal is to solve a difficult problem for sellers," he said. The goal of Amazon Lending, he added, is to "serve sellers of all sizes." Going forward, lending to third-party sellers based outside the U.S. "is something we'll certainly take a look at," the Amazon spokesman said. More

Slideshow: The Inner Rooms of Maya Angelou
The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A blue walkway curves around the back of Maya Angelou's cheery yellow house on Bartram Road in Winston-Salem, N.C. There, just past the gate, is a 6-foot-tall blue birdcage. Eight more birdcages are positioned near the guest cottage. The artwork is apt, a hint of the poet and author's first and most famous work, "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings." That book, which has 4.6 million paperback copies in print to date, helped pave the path to this home—one of three owned by Angelou, 84 years old. More

Jack Lenor Larsen on the Power of Fabric
ELLE Decor    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Along with the many architects and furniture designers who created the look of the postwar American home, one weaver was just as influential: Jack Lenor Larsen. The Seattle native had a revolutionary way with color, pattern, and texture, which made his fabrics a favorite with everyone from Frank Lloyd Wright to Marilyn Monroe. Now 85, Larsen — whose firm is currently owned by the esteemed British textile company Colefax and Fowler — has devoted the last 27 years to the creation of his LongHouse Reserve, a Japanese-inspired home and 16-acre sculpture garden in East Hampton, N.Y. "Whether I'm weaving or weeding," he says, "keeping my hands busy makes my mind work better." More

High Volume — Nick Cave
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Nick Cave is into fabulous. Take the black marks that scar the floor of his 3,500-square-foot loft in Chicago. "Fabulous," he says. Or the haunting portrait by the English artist John Kirby that Cave found at an art fair. “Isn’t it fabulous?” So is the porcupine-needle vestment from Cameroon that serves as a dividing screen in Cave's living room, and the framed quilt backed with love letters in his bedroom, where artworks hung on a yellow wall create so much visual excitement it's hard to imagine getting any rest. Refining the Bachelor Pad
The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
If your client is a dedicated outdoorsman, how do you design an indoor space for him? James Huniford, the interior designer, recently addressed this issue in a 2,200-square-foot Manhattan, N.Y., apartment. Huniford's client, a commodities trader, is a Type-A-plus person (he is currently training for a "persistence hunt" in Africa). At home, what he discussed with the designer was the need for "a retreat," as he described it, "a place that was an oasis, that had an organic and natural calming feeling to it." Any city dwelling might benefit from Huniford's strategy to provide the tranquilities of the natural world. More

Swapping Out Tile Remakes A Room
The Sun News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Just the thought of remodeling a room can be overwhelming. Where to begin? What is the cost? What stays and what goes? These are some of the most complicated questions homeowners face when choosing to remodel. The fear is that once the hammer begins to tear away at your comfort zone, there's no turning back. Tile plays a large part in remodeling when considering a kitchen or bathroom remodel. These two living spaces are the most expensive to remodel. If you're contemplating changing the layout of the space, a plumber, electrician and kitchen/bath designer have to be commissioned, which adds to the cost of the remodel job. More
