Deck The Halls!
Architectual Digest    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
"Everything started as a trickle," says sought-after New York event planner Bronson van Wyck, who is known for conceiving lavish yet elegant affairs—from the Whitney Museum gala to parties for Daphne Guinness and President Barack Obama. "But for the past few years, we've had 50 to 60 calls from people wanting us to decorate their houses for Christmas." The lucky number of folks who usually get Van Wyck’s bespoke tree-trimming and mistletoe-hanging services? Two, maybe three "old friends or longtime clients," he says. More

Beyond Pinterest: 3 Emerging Social Photo-Sharing Sites for Business
Entrepreneur    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Hundreds of businesses have turned to social photo-sharing site Pinterest as a new way to promote their products and share ideas. Pinterest even announced several new tools to help businesses share more content on the site. But as popular as Pinterest is, using it to convert followers into customers isn't always easy. Photos by individual users don't always lead back to a retail source. Even when they do, there's no clear path for potential buyers. There are no "buy" buttons and no indication that two clicks will take you to the photo source. More

'Hitchcock' home designs nail late-1950s style
Los Angeles Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
"Hitchcock," starring Anthony Hopkins as the famed director and Helen Mirren as his wife, has a lot more to catch the eye than Scarlett Johansson's re-creation of the Bates Motel shower scene in "Psycho." Production designer Judy Becker walked us through the film's varied interiors, which run from from Old Hollywood parlor to Jet Age kitchen to midcentury bachelor pad at the beach. "We followed their basic taste," said Becker, who pored over period photographs of Alfred and Alma Hitchcock's clapboard, pre-World War II residence in Bel-Air and consulted vintage swatch cards for wall paint colors. Interiors: A history of interior design
Scripps Howard News Service via Peoria Journal Star    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Ever wonder how the business of interior design got started? How about taking a little history lesson to find out? In the past, home interiors were put together sort of instinctively as part of the building process. The idea of an interior designer came about as a consequence of society's complex architecture as people wanted and still want effective and attractive use of space. More

When Michael Aram and his partner, Aret Tikiryan, welcomed their twins, Anabel and Thadeus, into their lives last year, they were living in a sleek modern triplex. "We had glass stairs, cement floors, balconies with 20-foot drops and three bathrooms, but not one bathtub," said Aram, 49, who owns the decorative accessories and tabletop company that bears his name. "The apartment was so unsafe for them." More

Dr. Color is in: Meet the Consultant Who Changed the Face of San Francisco Victorians
The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Here's a piece of trivia about San Francisco's confection-colored Victorians: Their exteriors may owe less to the Victorian era than to a local resident who calls himself Dr. Color. Bob Buckter graduated from San Francisco State University and was working as a house painter in the 1970s when he realized he had a knack for choosing colors. He didn't know much about original Victorian design — and still doesn't — but he persuaded people to pay him to be a color consultant, suggesting hues that would make their houses stand out without looking garish.
