Mayfest Canceled Due to Swine Flu Fears

Mayfest officials posted a statement from Richard Zavala, Fort Worth's director of parks and community development, "The Tarrant County Health Department, in the interest of public health and safety, has declared that all outdoor public gatherings must be canceled." New Salt Lake City Fees Turn Off Downtown Festival Organizers

13 Die in Chinese Fireworks Plant Blast

At least 13 people were killed in an explosion at an unlicensed fireworks factory operated out of a house in eastern China, officials said. The blast in Yangzhuangzi, Qingyun County, in the province of Shandong China, was so forceful it broke windows and cracked walls in other houses in the village, Xinhua, the official government news agency, reported. The three-room house where the explosion occurred was destroyed. More

Could Swine Flu Affect Vancouver Olympics?

Canada's national pandemic plan suggests the Vancouver Canada 2010 Olympics could be side-swiped by the looming global flu epidemic. If swine flu, which is slowly infecting people in many countries, is declared a pandemic strain — and the World Health Organization believes that to be "imminent" — it would sweep across this country in waves of illness over 12 to 18 months, according to The Canadian Pandemic Influenza Plan for the Health Sector, the massive government document intended to guide the nation through such an emergency.
