Security implications of major sporting events
Chatham House    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Major sporting events such as the Olympic Games, this month's football World Cup and the October Commonwealth Games in Delhi present serious security challenges. As well as taking place in large, complex and dispersed locations, such events attract a range of criminal activities: terrorism or direct action groups try to make a statement in front of a global television audience, while organised and petty criminals attempt to cash-in on the influx of spectators, VIPs and corporate hospitality guests. Host nations and governing bodies, meanwhile, are constrained in their planning by the need for the event to run smoothly and efficiently, their reputation depends on it. More

Arts and sport must step up to the plate and trim by 3 percent, despite frontline fears
The Guardian    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The frontline of British arts and culture will take a hit from cuts, with all organizations funded by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport required to cut at least 3 percent of their budget by the end of March 2011. Most organizations in question – such as the national museums and the U.K. Film Council – will lose exactly 3 percent. However, Arts Council England – the body through which most arts organizations are funded – will lose a disproportionate 4 percent of their budget. More

Festivals shunning sponsors' cash
BBC    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
They are praying for another dry, warm weekend in the Brecon Beacons when the Green Man music festival takes place in late August. But even if the sun is shining, punters should not expect to be sitting back enjoying Mumford & Sons or Billy Bragg while licking a Cornetto. "We had Walls ice cream approach us to be a sponsor last year," says the festival's managing director Fiona Stewart. "They would have given us lots of money as well, which would have been nice, but then we'd have had to sell their products. "Anyway, we've already got handmade ice cream from Wales which our audience is used to and, to be honest, I much prefer it as well. More
