Bonnaroo: More than just a music festival

The Bonnaroo Works Fund the charitable arm of the world-renowned Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, announced recipients of the organization's annual grants. Twenty local and state nonprofits received grants totaling $139,250 to continue their good works. In addition to the grants made, Bonnaroo officials have tallied this year's fundraising totals and report that community organizations earned more than $230,000 in commissions while assisting with festival concession booths this year.

International events award adds feather to Rotorua's cap

FTS and Visa team on cashless solution for community-wide events

Festival Transaction Services, Inc. based in Seattle, has teamed with Visa, a leader in global payments technology, to launch a cashless financial services solution for fairs, festivals and other community-wide events. The new service will use prepaid Cards-as-Tickets for entry and for making purchases at the events. The service cuts ticketing costs, reduces cash handling risks and offers event organizers new opportunities for revenue and sponsorship.

Edinburgh festival budgets ringfenced from cutbacks

Council leaders in Edinburgh have vowed to protect their funding of the city's money-spinning festivals, despite having to make £36 million budget cuts over the next few months. Councillors said the festivals were being prioritized because of their importance to the city's economy and that cutbacks would have been a "slap in the face" after a record-breaking summer in the capital.

Are music festivals unfairly targeted for drugs?

Following the high-profile deaths linked to drug overdoses at major dance music events at home and abroad, an international festival promoter and an Australian youth support group have both spoken out saying that music festivals are unfairly targeted as simply drug-taking events. Music festivals have come under scrutiny following the death of a 23-year-old man who swallowed "three pills", according to Police reports, at West Sydney's Defqon.1 "hardcore" dance festival, where 14 more were hospitalized and 84 arrested on drugs charges.

City faces funding shortfall, as Calgary continues to party

Special events like festivals, parades, runs and community parties in Calgary have become so popular the city says it can barely afford to subsidize them — but it still wants to. A report made to city council on Sept. 16 says the number of Calgary festivals and events rose 12 percent between 2011 and 2012. The city provided financial support to 195 of them — triple the number of events subsidized three years ago.

Syracuse police may bring security cameras to Clinton Square

That polka you dance at the Syracuse Polish Festival might soon be recorded on the cops' version of "Candid Camera." City police will apply for a $50,000 state grant to put surveillance cameras in Clinton Square to enhance their ability to monitor special events for criminal activity. The city council authorized the grant application.
