Event planners face lost business and 'chaos' due to government shutdown

The federal government shutdown comes at one of the busiest times of year for D.C.'s event planners and caterers and they are feeling the pain from a combination of lost business and the scramble to find alternate event venues. "We're done until further notice," says Susan Lacz, CEO of Ridgewells, which has the exclusive contract for events on the House side of the Capitol. "We just lost six figures' worth of business on the Hill today alone."

Government shutdown halts street piano festival in North Carolina

Revitalized 2013 Taste of Chicago profitable for the 1st time since 2007

Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events announced that the 2013 Taste of Chicago was profitable for the first time since 2007 as the revitalized festival continues to improve and succeed. The festival made $272,000 in profit, generated an estimated $106 million in total business activity to the Chicago economy and generated more than $2.35 million in tax receipts for the city. In addition, the festival supported 1,122 full- and part-time jobs generating $39.5 million in wages and salaries earned by employees of businesses associated with or impacted by the Taste of Chicago.

Giving drug advice along with music

When the TomorrowWorld festival opens outside Atlanta, concertgoers can expect to see safety measures that have become common at European electronic dance music festivals but have yet to catch on in the United States: A nonprofit drug education group will be giving advice, not only on the dangers of drug abuse, but also on how those who choose to take party drugs can use them more safely.
Music fest's impact pegged at $9.9 million

Squamish's largest music festival brought the tunes and big dough to town. The 2013 Squamish Valley Music Festival generated $18.7 million worth of economic activity for the province, stated organizers, citing a report based on the Conference Board of Canada's Festival and Events Assessment Model. Of that, $9.9 million was pumped into Squamish's economy.
Austin's weird festival-based economy

Austin isn't a city short on mottos. Austin officially calls itself the "Live Music Capital of the World," while bumper stickers demand to "Keep Austin Weird," an homage to the eclectic character of the city. Both sayings speak to Austin's unorthodox economic base: Cultural and technological festivals.

Ontario festival grant program expands

Celebrate Ontario, the province's fund for local festivals and events, is now accepting applications for 2014. The fund, which according to London North Center MPP Deb Matthews supported 22,000 jobs and more than 200 festivals and events across the province in 2013, has a new category for International Amateur Sport Hosting for 2014.
City eliminates event meter fee

Bloomington, Ind., recently eliminated a proposed fee for use of metered spaces by street festivals and other events after community members expressed concerns. The festival parking meter policy, which was scheduled to go into effect Oct. 1, would have required festivals and other downtown events to pay a fee for each metered parking spot.
New fund launched to help community event organizers

Organizers of community events in Calderdale, U.K., will have the opportunity to receive a financial boost from a new fund. Calderdale Council has launched a Community Festival and Events Fund, a £25,000 fund specifically designed to help community groups hold local small-scale events across the borough. The fund has been launched in response to the growing number of community events being held in towns and villages across Calderdale which the council is asked to support.

Balloonapalooza creates $1.1 million in economic impact

Organizers from Balloonapalooza say the festival has created an economic impact of over one million dollars. Balloonapalooza's first Economic Impact and Strategic Alliance Study has revealed that the Downtown Windsor, U.K., Business Improvement Association's annual summer festival had an economic impact of just short of $1.1 million, and that event-related spending supported the equivalent of 11 full-year jobs and generated $318,657 in tax revenue.
ADA and wheelchair accessibility

The harshest critique any event can receive is the non-compliance of ADA guidelines and the failure to provide a good experience for the attendee.
