Rideau Canal Festival suspended

After five years of celebrating Ontario's only UNESCO World Heritage site, the Rideau Canal Festival has been suspended indefinitely, its board of directors announced. Decreases in government funding as well as difficulty in finding corporate sponsors led to the decision, said the festival's executive director Michel Gauthier.

AEG Live awarded Hyde Park gigs — New contract for 6 summer concerts

The five-year partnership will begin in 2013, with six summer concerts planned for each year, although a Westminister Council ruling allowed for nine events each year. AEG Live is responsible for staging the Coachella music festival in California and the annual RockNess Festival in Scotland. AEG Live said it planned to bring an "exceptional and ground-breaking" summer festival to Hyde Park while "re-invigorating the venue."

City of Roanoke, Va., cuts ties with group that produced its events

WDBJ-7 has learned that Downtown Roanoke Inc. will replace EventZone as the organization to produce festivals for the City of Roanoke, Va. The City of Roanoke has cut ties with EventZone, an organization that has produced festivals for the city for the past 43 years, according to a news release from EventZone. EventZone says it was informed recently that the City of Roanoke has chosen another organization to put on events for the city.

Even though their race was called off, marathoners were still on the move in New York. Hundreds of runners wearing marathon shirts and backpacks full of supplies took the ferry to hard-hit Staten Island and ran to stricken neighborhoods to help. Thousands of others poured into Central Park to put in 26.2 miles after the official cancellation of the world's largest marathon because of Superstorm Sandy.

Lakes Alive, which featured street parades and a show performed entirely on Derwentwater, also attracted 50,000 visitors during its summer run. The study, for organizers Kendal Arts International, found 15,000 visitors were from outside Cumbria. Plans for further events in 2013 are being finalized.

Fire code to require crowd managers at large events

Of all the proposed modifications and additions to the City of Conroe's fire code, the requirement of crowd managers at events in excess of 1,000 will be an "educational process" for groups that host activities throughout the city. The need for crowd managers at both indoor and outdoor events is one of the significant changes between the 2003 and 2009 International Fire Codes discussed at a special workshop hosted by the Conroe City Council.
