Super Bowl volunteers to get paid

Indianapolis utilized 8,500 volunteers to host the 2012 Super Bowl. Not one of them got a penny for their time and effort. That might not be the case if Indianapolis wins its bid to host the Super Bowl in 2018 or any other year. Since the inception of the Super Bowl, there's been a history of the host committee providing a wide range of volunteers to handle a variety of tasks — all at no charge to the host committee or the league.

Festival organizers should stand their ground on supplier costs

Festival organizers should not be forced to pay suppliers high deposits ahead of a festival, according to an expert panel at an Association of Independent Festivals' seminar. As part of the AIF's Seminars event on festival financials, which took place Nov. 12 at London's Minster Exchange, the industry discussed how festival organizers can manage cash flow before and after events.

Amy Kule spent a couple of afternoons with Maureen O'Hara in the late 1990s. O'Hara, originally of County Dublin in Ireland, is a celebrated film actress of an earlier era. Odds are strong — no, overwhelming — that you have seen her in one of her best-known roles, that of Doris Walker, the woman who runs the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in the classic 1947 version of "Miracle on 34th Street."

Music festival seeking home may carry baggage

Sparks flew and tempers flared during a Board of Zoning Appeals meeting, as plans for possibly bringing a large-scale music festival into Jefferson County, W.Va., were presented. The All Good Festival is a five-day music festival and campout, which was formerly held in Preston County, W.Va. and later moved to a location in Ohio. The event's organizers want to bring the festival to the Stiles family farm, located in Kabletown near Ward Clipp Road, in July or August 2014.

Bournemouth will keep aiming big — but events have got to work for benefit of the town

Bournemouth, U.K., will keep aiming big when it comes to events — but won't spread itself too thin. That was the message from Bournemouth's tourism chief when he updated councilors on the borough's plans for entertaining its residents and those from further afield. Addressing the economy and tourism overview and scrutiny panel, Mark Smith said each event had to be safe, entertaining, attractive and profile-raising for the town.
