Counselors can tap into their interpersonal skills to facilitate meaningful dialogue that invites others to engage rather than become defensive.
"As counselors, we have a unique set of interpersonal skills that can be extremely useful when facilitating conversations about racial injustice," writes Amanda L. Giordano, an LPC and assistant professor at the University of Georgia. "We are primed to listen well, validate and gently present alterative viewpoints. Perhaps we can all commit to using our skills to facilitate meaningful dialogue that could lead to lasting, systemic change."

Dunbar shares some great strategies and tools to help with time management and awareness. Blending a family successfully is complicated and as the number of stepfamilies continues to grow, counselors are more likely to see clients needing help in building strong family connections. Statistics are staggering: 1 out of every 3 Americans is now either a stepparent, a stepchild or is part of some other form of a blended family. Counselors with training and experience in stepfamily dynamics can help their clients meet the challenges of daily living and foster healthier relationships. Intervening for Stepfamily Success: One Case, Multiple Perspectives, edited by Joshua M. Gold, synthesizes the emerging knowledge base on the diversity of stepfamilies and provides concrete examples of how to apply multiple family systems theories and treatment planning to common stepfamily issues.

No matter what the topic is, there seems to be myths out there about it. Whether it's that gum takes seven years to digest once swallowed, or that cracking your knuckles causes arthritis. I'm not exactly sure why myths are created, but I do have some thoughts about the counseling myths I've heard over the years. I'm not sure how these counseling myths originated, but my thoughts are that they were created by people who were afraid to take the step into personal growth, and/or who had a negative experience in counseling.

Mental health is something we all have, just like physical health. And just like physical health, mental health can sit anywhere on a scale from good to bad. It's a commonly accepted fact that adults spend roughly one-third of their lives at work. That's a significant amount of time, within which we are likely to experience a spectrum of physical and mental health.

Nearly half of American youths struggle with a mental illness before turning 18, while 12 percent have experienced a bout of depression. But even though playing sports on a regular basis can boost physical and mental health, for some serious high-school athletes — many who train year-round and might need an athletic scholarship to afford college tuition — sports can be a key contributor to depression and anxiety.

The effective counselor asks good questions. Of course, many good ones derive from what the client says. But I've found the following questions valuable in many circumstances: You might ask them of yourself, of friends, colleagues, job or dating candidates, or in networking situations.
I'm a career counselor and so the questions are most directly applicable in that, but they're more broadly applicable.

Here are five simple keys that unlock the door behind which your best life can be found. The first time Jessica Calise can remember her 9-year-old son Joseph's anxiety spiking was about a year ago, when he had to perform at a school concert. He said his stomach hurt and he might throw up. "We spent the whole performance in the bathroom," she recalls. Jessica decided to enroll in an experimental program, one that was very different from other therapy for childhood anxiety that she knew about. It wasn't Joseph who would be seeing a therapist every week — it would be her.

Alex Rozenblat can still hear the cries of a wounded boy calling for help as she hid from the gunfire that killed 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School last year.
Talking to therapists at the school in Parkland, FL, didn't help. Each session had a different counselor, and she found herself rehashing traumas she had already expressed. She would rather turn to her friends, who understand what she went through.
"There is slight pressure to get better as quickly as you can, and since it's been a year, everyone thinks that you are better," the 16-year-old said.

My best friend left the Financial Times a few weeks ago. She wanted to leave and her departure, after a long notice period, was expected. But it came as no less of a blow. She was lightened and excited by her new horizons. I was left behind. And I was very sad.
My family were taken aback by such angst. I am not given to big displays of emotion. "What are you, 14? Get over it," was my daughter's critical assessment.

How do you feel when someone starts a sentence with "If I'm being totally honest," or "May I be honest with you?" Are they lying the rest of the time? What have they been hiding?
It's a setup. It's a justification for them to share their opinion or feedback about you, while keeping themselves conveniently out of the hot seat.

Once, in my early twenties, I didn't sleep for two weeks.
Every morning I'd count the days before I was due to defend my thesis, and every night a wave of nausea would hit me. It felt visceral and unending — until I experienced my first panic attack, which will teach you the true meaning of "visceral." Ultimately, the sleep deprivation led me to a white-walled doctor's office where I first heard the words "You have social anxiety."

But sometimes, going at it alone or even calling in opinions of loved ones isn't enough to resolve the issues completely.
