Counseling Today
A person's family of origin and family relationships influence that individual's health, personality and life patterns — and, when explored in therapy, provide a fuller picture from which to help the client. That understanding can be expanded even further when the individual consents to involving family members in counseling sessions.
CT Online
If we can see how grief might be driving our clients' dysfunctions, then what we should be treating is grief rather than just depression, addiction or other symptoms of grief. We cannot change loss. Facing it and finding ways to cope are the keys to resolution.
CT Online
As professional counselors, we are braving telehealth, juggling our own mental health needs amid those of our clients, and helping friends and family members adjust to uncertainty and unemployment, all while trying to pepper in some self-care and generally navigate this unprecedented time for ourselves.
We must take care of ourselves before we can help others (similar to the guidance we give to our clients). We must practice self-care. We must resist the urge to assuage our lack of control with overexposure to the news. We must resist the downward spiral.

Despite a high prevalence of trauma exposure and revictimization among undergraduate students and their subsequent development of PTSD, anxiety disorders, and depression, attempts to identify risk and mitigating factors in this population have been limited. To better understand and treat psychological distress following traumatic events, researchers and clinicians are increasingly focusing on the role of mindfulness to promote resilience and well‐being. New research in the Journal of College Counseling examines the cumulative effects of multiple trauma exposure on symptomatology and quality of life in college students and the distinct contributions of mindfulness facets to these outcomes. The results suggest that the delivery of a brief mindfulness‐based intervention or integration of a subset of mindfulness components (e.g., describe, act with awareness, nonjudge) into clinical practice may uniquely predict and impact trauma symptom severity.

Intimacy: It's what keeps relationships together after they're already formed. It's the bond that's built between individuals that grows as their relationship furthers itself. But how do we know what intimacy is? Intimacy is being one's true and unfiltered self to another without fear of judgement or abandonment. Intimacy is vulnerability. Which brings me to the question, when do we learn and experience vulnerability? We experience vulnerability from the moment we're born to the last breath we take. At an early age, we begin to learn about others' emotions as well as our own. What they look like, what they feel like and what can cause them.

During the month of May, the American Counseling Association (ACA) joins the national movement to raise awareness about mental health. Established in 1949, Mental Health Month sought to put a spotlight on the importance of mental health and wellness. Each year, we continue to fight against the stigma associated with mental health, provide support for those with mental illness and for the counselors supporting them, and advocate for policies on behalf of those with mental illness and their loved ones.

Since 1952, a singular idea has consistently driven our curricula, training, and community work. That key guiding idea is Alfred Adler’s groundbreaking concept of social interest or gemeinschaftsgefühl – the idea that our health resides in our community life and connections. Today, this idea is more necessary than ever to drive the work and change most needed in challenged communities around the world. Click here for more information.

Most of us struggle to know what to say to a friend experiencing a loss. With the COVID-19 death toll climbing, many of us will be faced with not only our own losses, but the losses our loved ones experience as well. Grief also looks different right now; funerals are limited to small groups of people, and our typical means of processing loss, like support groups, seeing loved ones and attending one's place of worship aren't available, at least not in person.

This is how 2 a.m. has looked for me for the past few weeks: the entire house is quiet, but I've been awake in bed for nearly two hours, staring at the ceiling, reading the news (big mistake!) and ruminating over the ticking clock and all of my current fears — hence why I'm nowhere close to falling back asleep.

I have come to realize this is a thing.
It recently occurred to me that there are some people we encounter, and may even have long-term relationships with, who are completely elusive individuals. By that I mean, you just can't seem to "have" them. They are somewhat there, acting like you are in a relationship with them, but when you step back and think about the reality of the situation, you realize they are actually quite emotionally disconnected from you.

Evidence suggests that disordered eating (DE) is a growing problem among adolescent athletes, with a negative impact on both physical and mental health. Additionally, DE can progress to eating disorders, which have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness. Multiple organizations — including the American College of Sports Medicine, the National Athletic Trainers Association and the International Olympic Committee — have recommended regular screening for DE using a screening tool designed specifically for athletes.

For many veterans' spouses, we've watched our partners struggle not only with post-traumatic stress disorder, but with other mental health conditions as well. Around 80% of people with PTSD wrestle with at least one other co-occuring mental health condition in their lifetime.
What many people don't see is the impact PTSD and comorbidity have on vets' spouses.

Business leaders are justifiably focused on the here and now of the COVID-19 pandemic, but there's a looming second-order mental health crisis that is only beginning to emerge as a result of global quarantines and a massive, sudden shift to working from home. Since the outbreak of the pandemic, 75% of people say they feel more socially isolated, 67% of people report higher stress, 57% are feeling greater anxiety and 53% say they feel more emotionally exhausted, according to a global study of over 2,700 employees across more than 10 industries undertaken by Qualtrics and SAP during March and April 2020.

Parents' first concern when schools announce they are closing for the remainder of the semester is likely, "How am I going to maintain my child's learning?" However, your child's social and emotional development is also impacted by the loss of structured school time. While the schools are working hard to provide academic work to your child, you may find your efforts best suited to help your child with another consequence of school closing: their social life and developing social skills.

Kristen Bell is crushing her quarantine home workouts. She recently shared a time-lapse video on Instagram showing herself doing a series of at-home cardio and strength moves, led by Los Angeles-based trainer Charlie Curtis. Huffing and puffing between sets, a red-faced Bell can be seen doing weighted squats, renegade row push-ups, boat pose and burpees in her video. "I thought the burpees at the end would kill me," she joked in her caption.

Former U.S. Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy declared a loneliness epidemic in 2017, triggering a plethora of headlines. Now, many are asking whether steps like shelter-at-home and social distancing that are necessary to control the COVID-19 pandemic will exacerbate that loneliness epidemic and increase physical and behavioral health disorders and mortality.
