On average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. Professional counselors are charged with learning how to spot red flags and then carefully respond to this complicated and emotionally charged issue that is present in an uncomfortably large percentage of intimate relationships.

People weren’t coming to grief counseling centers after the Pulse nightclub shooting in 2016, so counselors started meeting people where they were: Memorial vigils, blood donation lines and even local bars.
Finding and helping people suffering from survivor guilt, PTSD and complicated grief can be challenging after large-scale catastrophic events, which are becoming more and more common. Counselors should prepare now to ensure they are ready to help survivors move forward, even in the face of resistance.

Individuals with disabilities have higher rates of unemployment than people without disabilities and this disparity exists across all disability types, age groups and genders. A new study in the June issue of the Journal of Employment Counseling (JEOC) evaluates the effectiveness of direct skills training (DST) in job interview proficiency with 126 ethnically diverse individuals, ages 18–66, who have a variety of cognitive, psychosocial and sensory disabilities and are receiving vocational services. Participants were placed in groups run by clinical mental health and rehabilitation counseling graduate students completing internships at various agencies serving people with disabilities. Results of this study support the feasibility of training entry-level counselors in the DST approach to teach job interview skills to people with a wide range of disabilities. Study participants demonstrated significant improvement in job interview preparedness, improved ability in answering difficult interview questions and greater confidence in highlighting past accomplishments.
Note. Full-text content from JEOC is free to National Employment Counseling Association members by logging into the ACA website, and available on a pay-per-view basis to nonmembers.

There are a plethora of activities, outings, festivals, events, concerts, museums, libraries, camps, parks, you name it that we can all take advantage if we make plans with our children each week of summer. We can find out about all these events with a couple swipes of our cell phones. The hard part is making the decision to follow through. Too many times in my office I listen to kids talking about how they wanted to go camping, to the park, to the pool, etc. but mom or dad was too busy or not engaged enough to make it happen.

I come to counseling because for one of the first times in my life, I am starting to feel heard, like really heard. I come to feel validated, or simply cared for and supported. I come to counseling to try to access my emotions in a way I didn’t ever think would be possible, or in a way I didn’t think I wanted or needed to. I am learning... I do need to do this, that accessing emotion is vital to moving through feelings. I am learning to be vulnerable and raw is vital to recovery, and without vulnerability healing is only on the surface.

Four days after the birth of our daughter, my husband and I brought her home from the hospital. We were exhausted but giddy, ready to start our new lives. For nine months I had imagined what those first weeks at home would be like: sleepless nights, bleary-eyed arguments, a few late-night tears, all bundled up in the soft happy glow of new motherhood. In short, an adventure. But none of that materialized. What I came up against instead was a sheer wall of blinding panic.

Whether it is the news of an affair involving a high profiled personality, a close family member, or a friend, people are quick to judge and lay blame on those who engage in infidelity. We believe romantic relationships are about meeting our needs for love, comfort and security. So when a person is found to be “cheating,” people are often saddened, hurt, and appalled as the act of infidelity represents a significant violation of relationship norms and betrayal of trust. Infidelity highlights the potential fragility of our closest and most important of relationships.

It's officially summer, which means all of the old classics are making an appearance. Our kids are going to be begging for Otter Pops, swimming in kiddie pools, riding their bicycles and playing with water guns. But are water guns bad? Should we, as parents, be allowing our kids to play with toys that look and sometimes even function like potentially deadly weapons?

Many of us never really learned how to feel our feelings. But we learned other things about emotions instead.
Maybe we learned that certain emotions were acceptable, while others were not. That is, we learned that happiness and excitement were fine, while anxiety, and even more so, anger were forbidden. And so, maybe you learned to swallow your rage, and shove it down further and further, deeper and deeper, to plaster a smile onto your face.

There was once a banker in his 50s who had worked seven days a week for 25 years and become a very wealthy man. The regret was overwhelming, and came out in panic attacks every Sunday. Would this man be able to find a way out of this cruel place he had created for himself?

Every year, despite knowing better, I’m surprised that my depression doesn’t magically disappear in the summer. In the winter, sure, of course I’m depressed! It’s cold and dark and all too easy to roll up in a blanket burrito and hibernate. But summer is supposed to be happy. Who cares if I know logically that that’s not how depression works? When the sun’s out and everyone is having fun, the heavy blanket of depression can feel like it’s downright mocking me.

Quite often, we parent in what could be considered non-ideal circumstances — when we’re physiologically and emotionally running on empty and tending to many other demands. Understandably, this can result in us becoming frustrated and upset when our children refuse to heed our advice or when they continually engage in what we perceive as harmful habits.

Over the past two decades, social robots have become an emerging field where there are many things still to work on. This field not only requires knowledge in mechanics, control, artificial intelligence, systems, etc., but also in psychology, design, ethics, etc.
In a new study, MIT researchers investigated different scenarios in therapy or education where social robots could be a useful tool for children. The study demonstrates that using “social robots” in pediatric units at hospitals can benefit children. It can be used in support sessions to help reduce sick children’s anxiety, pain and other distress in hospital setting.

In the popular American imagination, emotion and rationality are often mutually exclusive. One is erratic, unpredictable, and often a liability; the other, cool, collected, and absent obvious feeling. And even though research suggests that people experience emotions internally in similar ways no matter their gender, many Americans still regard emotion as uniquely feminine and weak.

Nearly everyone will know they have felt anxious about a maths question at some time in their lives. What may not seem so obvious is that many other people have felt the same way and that maths anxiety is a real problem.
So much so that the Maths Anxiety Trust has been set up to raise awareness of the issue. It points out the problem could be contributing to a quarter of 11-year-olds being below the standard expected of their age group and nearly a third of students failing to obtain a grade 4 (grade C in the old grading system) or higher in maths GCSE exams.

Many of us celebrate Independence Day by barbecuing, relaxing with loved ones and watching the bright-colored flashes of fireworks that light up the night sky. The Fourth of July may be a fun-filled holiday for you, but for pets, the holiday can potentially be scary and hazardous.
Dr. Stacy Eckman, a clinical associate professor for the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, explains that our celebrations could put pets at an increased risk for anxiety or injuries.
