Counseling Today
It's estimated that 37% of fire and emergency medical services professionals have contemplated suicide, which is nearly 10 times the rate of American adults in general. In fact, in the United States, more firefighters die from suicide than from fires.
First responders could benefit from counseling, but this population is often the last to ask for help. By getting to know the first responder community and tailoring approaches to match this population, counselors can break down some of the barriers that prevent these heroes from prioritizing their mental health.
Counseling Today
An integrative mind-body counseling approach often holds answers for clients who have suffered for years from chronic pain and exhausted traditional medical interventions with little to no relief.

Research demonstrates that people can remedy stress if they laugh more (casual leisure), find a hobby (serious leisure), and engage in meaning-making activities such as volunteering in their communities or toward social causes (project-based leisure).
Developing a home-based optimal leisure lifestyle (OLL) will provide transient moments in your day for positive emotion — a psychological breather from going stir-crazy and experiencing brain-numbing boredom.

Here we are as a nation grappling with the realities of institutional (aka systemic) racism once again. Yet the stakes have always been high when we remember the countless deaths of BIPOC in the last decade let alone for generations. Yet the 8 minutes and 46 seconds that led to the murder of George Floyd has brought forth a tsunami that has been unexpected and unprecedented. Still, the reality of racial violence was and is not a surprise for BIPOC.
ACA Publications
Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and toxic stress early in life can have a profound and enduring impact on personal development, social relationships, coping methods and career trajectories. The authors of an article in the June issue of The Career Development Quarterly (CDQ) discuss the literature linking trauma and career theories, and explore how career counseling could address the effects of ACEs using trauma-informed practices that may promote posttraumatic growth and empower a more resilient career path.
Note: Full-text content from CDQ is free to National Career Development Association (NCDA) members by logging into the NCDA website, and available on a pay-per-view basis to nonmembers through the Wiley Online Library.

Since 1952, a singular idea has consistently driven our curricula, training, and community work. That key guiding idea is Alfred Adler’s groundbreaking concept of social interest or gemeinschaftsgefühl – the idea that our health resides in our community life and connections. Today, this idea is more necessary than ever to drive the work and change most needed in challenged communities around the world. Click here for more information.

What is survivor's guilt? Google Dictionary describes it this way: A condition of persistent mental and emotional stress experienced by someone who has survived an incident in which others died. For example, "He escaped with his life but suffered from survivor’s guilt." This is the definition most people think of as "survivor's guilt." However, mental health professionals and therapists know that this concept applies far more widely than this description would suggest.
