How (Not) to Isolate During the COVID-19 Pandemic
Counseling Today
The coronavirus pandemic has curtailed social gatherings, travel and in-person events for the majority of 2020. Identifying the signs of isolation in clients — often seen as a red flag that a client may be regressing or struggling — has become a whole new ballgame as nearly everyone is physically isolated, and will be for the foreseeable future. "There are a lot of unique ways for us to connect with one another," says Ryan Holliman, a licensed professional counselor and supervisor in Dallas. "Limited options doesn't mean no options, and that's something clients really need to hear. There are ways [to find connection], but you have to be creative. The counselor needs to be a creative co-creator of options."

Counseling Strategies for Non-Death Losses
ACA Publications
As a society, and in our own lives, we have experienced much upheaval and loss over the past year. Counselors need to understand the many facets of grief and learn productive ways to assist grieving clients in the process of healing. In the October 2020 issue of ADULTSPAN Journal, Paul H. Smith and Heather Delgado provide a highly pertinent perspective on and suggestions for working with clients dealing with non-death losses. Using a case study and two contemporary models, they outline how to effectively use grief models in counseling with non-death losses across the life span.
Note. Full-text content from ADULTSPAN Journal is free to Association for Adult Development and Aging members by logging into the ACA website, and available on a pay-per-view basis to nonmembers.

FDA Clears Apple Watch Sleep App That Intervenes to Stop Nightmares Caused by PTSD
FierceBiotech
The FDA has cleared an app for the Apple Watch to help people suffering from nightmares or post-traumatic stress disorder get a better night's sleep.
Dubbed Nightware, the prescription app monitors the wearer's heart rate and movement while they sleep — and, if they're having a nightmare, gently prods them out of the dream without aiming to wake them up completely, using the smartwatch's vibrations.

Princess Diana's Real-Life Battle With Bulimia
Vogue
The third episode of season four of The Crown begins with a trigger warning: "The following episode includes scenes of an eating disorder, which some viewers may find troubling. Viewer discretion is advised."
Those scenes, it turns out, are focused on Emma Corrin's Princess Diana. She's suffering from feelings of deep loneliness upon joining the royal family, her husband-to-be is having an affair with Camilla Parker Bowles, she's all alone at Buckingham Palace and the media is watching her every move.

Virtual Reality and the COVID Mental Health Crisis
Scientific American
I am being challenged daily. As a frontline doctor, I find that the COVID-19 pandemic has not only tested my clinical abilities, but also strained my capacity to bear witness to grievous suffering. This suffering extends well beyond the physical distress of hospitalized patients battling the virus. The pandemic has also spawned a mental health crisis beyond anything I have seen in 25 years of caring for patients.

Helping Your Adolescent Build Self-Confidence
Psychology Today
For the adolescent, confidence can often be hard to come by.
During childhood, the girl or boy may have felt relatively self-assured in the smaller, simpler, and sheltered world of home and family. However, with the onset of adolescence (around ages 9-13), developmental insecurity begins.

Harry Styles: Meditation Changed My Life
OnSachem.com
Harry Styles credits meditation for "changing" his life.
The "Watermelon Sugar" hitmaker turned to meditation and pilates and admits it has helped him feel a bit "more present," as well as being beneficial for his mental health.
Styles said, "It has changed my life, but it's so subtle. I feel like I'm able to enjoy the things that are happening right in front of me, even if it's just food, coffee or being with a friend. Meditation just brings a stillness that has been really beneficial, I think, for my mental health."

Less Screen Time and More Sleep Critical for Preventing Depression
EurekAlert!
A cross-sectional and longitudinal analysis of data from the U.K. Biobank, involving almost 85,000 people, has found that lifestyle factors such as less screen time, adequate sleep, a better-quality diet and physical activity strongly impact depression.
With evolving data exploring the link between depression and lifestyle factors, the international research team led by Western Sydney University say their findings published in BMC Medicine may help inform public health policy.

The One Question to Ask Yourself When Facing a Moral Quandary
Psychology Today
We spend a lot of mental energy trying to decide what is right and what is wrong, and rightly so; the world would not be nearly as nice of a place if humans didn't engage in the deep moral reasoning that they do.
However, new research appearing in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences suggests that there might be an easier way to discern right from wrong.

Bachelorette Star Angie Kent Reveals How Her Lactose Intolerance Affected Her Mental Health
Body + Soul
There are so many lactose-free dairy options out there now. However, when Angie Kent was growing up, not so much. There wasn't even much information about lactose intolerance, which she now realizes was the reason she couldn't take breast milk after about the age of eight weeks and why, after noticing how eating regular dairy products brought on discomfort and pain, she made a "conscious effort" to research her symptoms and seek medical advice.

'Lack of Guidance' Compounds Barriers to Mental Health Care in Pediatric Rheumatology
Healio
Depression, anxiety, and suicide ideation are all elevated in pediatric and adolescent rheumatology populations compared with the general population, according to a presenter at ACR Convergence 2020.
"This topic is vast," Tamar Rubinstein, M.D., M.S., of Albert Einstein College of Medicine, said in her presentation. This vastness is largely due to the diversity of pediatric rheumatologic disorders and the "breadth" of mental health disorders that impact not just these patients, but young people in general.
