Wellness: Getting Beyond the Buzzword
Counseling Today
In the realm of counseling, wellness encompasses way more than yoga pants and running shoes. Wellness is a framework that allows counselors to treat clients holistically and leverage their strengths to address not only presenting concerns but also overall life satisfaction. "If I were talking to a beginning practitioner [about wellness], I would say, 'Mind, body, spirit — bringing those things into intake and sessions is really important,'" says Ann Church, a licensed clinical mental health counselor and co-founder of a wellness-focused therapy practice in Charlotte, North Carolina. "Because we can teach all the skills and coping mechanisms and all sorts of models to people, but if we're not helping them use [and draw from] other aspects of their life, we're really seeing them through a narrow, narrow lens. We're seeing them as a diagnosis rather than as a whole human being."

Remote Work Could Be Silver Lining of Pandemic for Some Veterans, Including Those With PTSD
Military Times
The global coronavirus pandemic has created an unprecedented increase in remote work arrangements for Americans — a Gallup survey conducted in early August revealed that more than 30% of American workers are mostly or completely remote, and record levels of cases and hospitalizations may keep people working from home for the foreseeable future. Post 9/11-era veterans stand to benefit from this shift, according to experts and veterans interviewed by Military Times.

How to Sustain Behavioral Health Care in Primary Care Practice
American Medical Association
With careful planning, the integration of behavioral health and primary care services improves patient care and outcomes and can be financially sustainable for practices that rely on fee for service, value-based care payments, or some combination thereof. The need to expand services where patients can more easily access care has only become more imperative as the nation's mental health suffers during the pandemic.

Manic-Depression Misconception
Psychology Today
Manic-depression, or bipolar disorder, is one of the most misdiagnosed conditions in psychiatry. Part of the problem is that the term "bipolar" has been watered down to an adjective for moody. Anyone who has worked in mental health can tell you that if someone's symptoms are erratic and involve mood changes, an (inappropriate) bipolar diagnosis may be on the way.

Pandemic Takes Toll on Children's Mental Health
NPR
As a toddler, Kenley Gupta stopped speaking after her mom died. Over the years, she recovered from the anxiety disorder, called mutism. However, in March, the 8-year-old went silent again.

"I was really sad I couldn't see my friends," she said.

Measuring Broken Hearts: Divorce Has Negative Effects on Physical and Mental Health
EurekAlert!
Going through a divorce is extremely challenging, and previous research has highlighted the adverse effects that it can have on divorcees. A recent study in open-access journal Frontiers in Psychology is the first to examine health impacts immediately after a divorce. The study found that the mental and physical health of recent divorcees was worse than that of the background population and that higher levels of conflict predicted worse mental health, regardless of other factors.

Hang in There: Impact of Mental Health Challenges Is Wide, but So Are Resources to Help
Steamboat Pilot & Today
When asked about the collective status of mental health in the community, there's one image that sticks in counselor Molly Lotz's head.
It's the classic motivational "Hang in there" kitten poster. There are variations, but all have a cat with its claws barely clutching onto a branch as its feet dangle in the air. "I really don't know many people who are thriving right now," Lotz said. "Most people are just surviving."
