Beyond understanding the biological and mental health implications of food allergies, counselors can wield an even more important tool: Compassion.
"Sometimes, even medical professionals aren't good at that part. They send [people] off with an EpiPen and say, 'Come back in six months.' In a perfect world, they would send them off with a list of resources for mental health and wellness. Counselors can play a very important part to fill in that gap, even if it's just an empathic ear. That is incredibly therapeutic in itself."

The arts and art therapies can have a significant positive affect on mental health if used properly. Enhancing health and well-being through creative expression has had a long history, but has been more widely used in recent years to spark change and progress in therapeutic work with adults, children, groups and families. It's not unusual for parents to feel overwhelmed by the demands their children may be making for all the latest in toys and gifts. The holiday season is a time of massive amounts of advertising, a great deal of it aimed at our children. Few parents are able or willing to say "yes" to all the toy requests their children may present, but if you approach it correctly, saying "no" doesn't have to make you feel like a Scrooge.

Networking is the exchange of information and ideas that can significantly impact your career. For example, someone you met three years ago at a conference may end up collaborating on the same research project as you, serving alongside you on a committee, or even be your future boss! It's important to always make a good first impression so when your paths cross again you can hold up your "end of the bargain" in whatever capacity that entails. Networking may help you get a job you've always wanted, or be on that research proposal, or get published. Here are a few tips to make it out there in the networking world.

The National Hotline Improvement Act was signed into law August 2018. The law requires the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to examine the effectiveness of the current National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and the feasibility of changing to it to a three-digit N11 number. The law also requires the VA to report to the FCC how well the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and the Veterans Crisis Line are working to address the needs of veterans.
The public has the opportunity to comment on the proposed change. To submit a public comment, visit the FCC's Express Comment platform, fill out and submit the form. You can search the proceeding by typing "National Hotline" into the first field, or search for it by reference number 18-336.
The deadline for public comment is December 10.

Earlier in the fall, Congress passed the annual funding bills that will keep the Departments of Education, Veterans Affairs and Health and Human Services open for Fiscal Year 2019.

Active-duty members of the U.S. military are much more open to the idea of mental health counseling than veterans, a new survey finds.
"There has been a fundamental shift in the military regarding attitudes on mental health, and we have seen real progress in reducing the stigmas associated with professional counseling," said survey author Samantha Dutton. She is program director in the College of Humanities and Sciences at the University of Phoenix.

Saturday Night Live performer Pete Davidson isn't laughing about the public harassment he's faced during and after his relationship with singer Ariana Grande.
The comedian recently took to Instagram to address bullying he's endured for the last nine months, roughly the length of his relationship with former fiancée Grande, which ended in October.
"I'm trying to understand how when something happens to a guy the whole entire world just trashes him without any facts or frame of reference," Davidson wrote.

Even among queer people, mental health remains a tough topic. Many of us struggle with it but are blocked from obtaining services due our country's capitalist healthcare system or internalized shame. Over the past few years, text therapy has cropped up as an alternative to traditional therapy and it makes sense. We use the internet to shop, to communicate, to hook up—why not use it as a tool to improve our mental health, too?

In the midst of yet another panic attack, Tina Chan realized she needed better help. Chan was a first-year student at the University of Waterloo, and the transition from high school wasn't going smoothly.
Chan had always excelled in school, but she pushed herself harder in new classes while living alone for the first time. When she started to struggle, she reached out to resources on and off campus. She received the phone numbers for intimidating crisis hotline numbers or pamphlets full of text. Neither was useful to her.

The issue was peanut butter. No matter what form it took — creamy, crunchy, straight from the jar or smeared between two slices of bread — it caused Sunny Gold enormous anxiety.
In fact, the gooey spread posed such a threat that during her first few years of recovery from binge eating disorder, between 2006 and 2007, Ms. Gold, 42, a communications specialist in Portland, OR, couldn't keep it around the house. It was one of her favorite foods, and she feared she would binge on it. Just knowing it was there, lurking in her cupboard, made her feel "unsafe," as she put it.

First responder families face significant challenges. When a parent or spouse is a first responder, they often work long shifts and odd hours. The work itself is highly demanding and stressful. These pressures can take a toll on the family unit, causing strain on marriages and parent-child relationships.
For law enforcement families in particular, there are additional causes of stress. Negative public discourse about policing in both the mainstream media and on social media can cause family members emotional distress and make them worry even more about the welfare of their officer.
