The Revised Meaning of Self-Care in the Wake of COVID-19
CT Online
Counselors are re-thinking self-care — both for themselves and their clients — as routines have been offset by quarantining measures from the COVID-19 pandemic. In spite of the limitations, self-care has never been more meaningful given the conditions that we found (and, in some cases, still find) ourselves in.

Counseling During COVID-19: Three Realizations from a Counselor in the Role of Supervisor
ACA Member Blogs
As I approached the end of my doctoral internship in supervision, I was excited for obvious reasons, such as the end of my final semester of courses nearing and minimizing the number of roles and responsibilities I have maintained throughout the course of my program. Here I share three realizations that I used to help guide me through the challenging time of supervising counselors during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Using Existential-Humanistic Counseling With Incarcerated Black Men
ACA Publications
Young Black males in judicial settings may experience well-founded mistrust of anyone associated with the criminal justice system, including counselors. An article in the July issue of the Journal of Humanistic Counseling (JOHC) discusses how existential-humanistic (EH) and Black critical theory (BlackCrit) may benefit counseling and advocacy with incarcerated Black men. To facilitate therapeutic relationships and advance culturally responsive practices, the authors provide EH counseling guideposts for counselors in judicial settings based on Black male phenomenological reports, components of BlackCrit, and counseling literature.

Note. Full-text content from JOHC is free to ACA/AHC members by logging into the ACA website, and available on a pay-per-view basis to nonmembers.

How Trauma Impacts Your Physical Health
EndocrineWeb
Trauma — especially early trauma — is linked to increased rates of anxiety, depression, suicidality and post-traumatic stress disorder. But that's not all. Trauma, if not managed, can also impact your physical health — years after it's occurred. Most of us are no stranger to life's many hardships, but the medical community hasn't always taken a trauma-informed approach to care (trauma-informed care presupposes that all patients have some form of trauma that may be affecting their well-being).

Turning Pain Into Meaning
PsychCentral
Events are traumatic when they are highly stressful, frightening or distressing. Such experiences can inflict deep psychological wounds, damaging our mental health and reducing our overall sense of well-being. Still, while the costs of trauma are well-documented, less consideration has been given to the counterintuitive possibility that trauma might contribute positively to our well-being in particular ways.

'Is My Parent Disturbed?' How Unhealthy Parents Behave
PsychCentral
Can you remember the impact of your childhood? Can you remember how your father and mother (or guardian) treated you? For most adults, they have a pretty healthy and positive view of their parents. Most of the adults I see in counseling remember the good, the bad and the challenges, but overall, they report a positive experience. 'Feels Like the World Is Against You:' Young People Struggle With Finding Mental Health Support Amid COVID-19 Pandemic
USA Today
Kathryn Boit feels "guilty for struggling so much" these past few months. As president of the Harvard Student Mental Health Liaisons, she has "college friends, acquaintances, and strangers reach out to me for resources and advice," she said. "I don't know the answers anymore." It's no wonder Boit, a Harvard sophomore, feels overwhelmed. Prevalence of depression among college students increased since the pandemic closed campuses this spring compared with fall 2019, according to a survey of 18,000 college students published by the Healthy Minds Network on July 9.

The Other 2nd Wave
Psychology Today
Throughout 2020, the U.S. has been playing catch-up against the coronavirus. As several well-researched articles have noted, lack of appropriate and timely response has been at the forefront and can be attributed to numerous factors including the highly contagious nature of the virus and simultaneously a delay in formulating an adequate medical management and containment strategy. While there are few, if any, silver linings with respect to eradicating this pandemic, the same does not have to be true when we look back years from now and examine how we began mobilizing to stem what is likely to become an increasingly serious public health crisis: psychological-emotional stress and skyrocketing rates of substance abuse.
