Stay up on building codes to keep deck sales rolling
Building Products Digest    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
As a decking dealer or distributor, you are dependent on manufacturers to not only produce products that are up to standard, but also products that are acceptable to the consumer. The decking materials you stock are affected by decisions made in the building code arena. More

Now's the time to get plans in place for a summer project
The Detroit News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Now is the perfect time to start thinking about the projects you want to accomplish this spring and summer. This includes landscaping, a new deck, driveway or room addition. You need to start planning to make sure you get things done when you want them, not when someone else gets around to you. People who want new decks always want them completed by Memorial Day. Decisions made by March might make that possible. Typically, people start thinking about getting a new deck in April. With all the deck products available, it may take people a few weeks to make a decision. To get a deck built by Memorial Day, it is a good idea to start planning now to be first in line. More

Time to sell? Your outdoor spaces can be the bonus buyers want
Gulf Breeze News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Many would-be home sellers are concerned about reduced housing prices, and those who are highly motivated are pulling out all the stops to make their homes more appealing than the competition. If you're preparing to sell this spring but aren't in a position to invest in ambitious renovations, such as a kitchen remodel or new hardwood floors, the best advice is to look to the "bonus" spaces in and around your home and maximize their appeal. Decks, patios, sunrooms and porches have always been popular with home buyers, but real estate agents say that too often those spaces are neglected or not used to their best advantage. More

A hardwood decking primer
Professional Deck Builder    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
To author Rob Arnold, there’s nothing like the look and feel of a fresh hardwood deck with a natural finish. All the while composite and PVC decking have been gaining market share, his local wood suppliers have been stocking more species, grades, and profiles of hardwood decking. Most of the decks his company builds incorporate at least some hardwood. In 2008 and 2009, 51 percent of his decks combined hardwoods with composites or PVC, 33 percent used all hardwoods, and just 16 percent used all plastic materials. More

The best tax breaks for small business
The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It's tax crunch time again. From March 15, when some corporations file, to the April 15 deadline for individuals, small-business owners are busily organizing their receipts and books—and looking for as many tax breaks as possible. But when filing small-business taxes, mind that the devil is in the details, warns Roni Lynn Deutch, author of "The Tax Lady's Guide to Beating the IRS and Saving Big Bucks on Your Taxes." It's wise to seek professional advice, and make sure to supply your adviser with records of any changes in your business, from staff layoffs to equipment purchases, she says. More
