Stain a bright idea for sun deck

If you prefer to install a wood deck, to keep it looking its best apply a stain or transparent sealer every few years. To finish a deck follow a procedure that applies to all wood decks built at least one foot or more above grade level and is appropriate for all wood decks including treated lumber, western red cedar, spruce or hemlock.   More

  • April 15 - Maryland Chapter Meeting at 6 p.m. at PPW-Baltimore. The special speaker will be a Deckspert from Deck Tools.
  • April 20 - Georgia Chapter Meeting at 5 p.m. Location TBA.
  • April 22 - The NADRA Joint NJ/NY Chapter Meeting starts at 6 p.m. and will take place at Myles F. Kelly, Inc., 43-57 Harrison Avenue, Harrison, NJ 07029, 973-481-0600. All builders, manufacturers, distributors and suppliers who want to get involved are welcome!
  • May 13 - Maryland Chapter Meeting at 6 p.m. at PPW-Baltimore. This will be a Deck for a Solider planning meeting.

Lumber rally ending on U.S. production jumps

Lumber's rally may be ending as the highest prices since 2007 prompt North American mills to boost output, according to Gerry Van Leeuwen at International Wood Markets Group. Lumber futures traded in Chicago will plunge 18 percent by the end of the year to $230 per 1,000 board feet from $281.50 yesterday, said Van Leeuwen, a vice president based in Vancouver who has been working in the wood-products industry for 27 years. While U.S. unemployment figures remained steady at 9.7 percent for February, the rate for construction workers rose to 27.1 percent, up from 24.1 percent a year ago, underscoring the continuing difficulties in this important sector of the economy. Interestingly, the basket of green building stocks in Canaccord Adam's Green Building Index are up 10.1 percent for the year, outperforming the 2.1 percent rise for the S&P 500 Index and 2.5 percent for the NASDAQ.
