Having now had some time to regroup after the IRC and IBC code hearings held in Dallas in May, Diana M. Hanson, NADRA Codes and Standards Committee Chairman, shares with you some thoughts on code development that affect everyone, whether they are builders, suppliers or manufacturers. One of the core reasons for the formation of NADRA in 2005 was to provide a voice for our industry. Since that time we have worked diligently to learn the ropes of the code development process, to participate in the making and changing of code for the benefit of our industry, and to form industry wide relationships and make alliances where possible. It was the second time in less than a week that a wood roof deck in Lower Manhattan had caught fire, underscoring the fact that such decking can be transformed into dangerous tinder if not properly cared for, said Salvatore J. Cassano, the fire commissioner. "Wood that is exposed to the air, exposed to the sun and the cold, it dries out and becomes fire prone," Mr. Cassano said. "It may be nice to have a roof deck, but make sure it's done according to the law, according to the codes." More

Big companies are building up cash and are expected to report strong earnings starting this week. Not so for small businesses that can’t get loans — or hire freely until they do. The gap helps explain why the economic rebound isn’t stronger and could even stall. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke stepped up pressure this week on banks and other lenders to break the logjam and lend more to smaller firms, which employ at least half of American workers. Small-business owners are relying on personal credit cards or raiding retirement accounts to stay afloat, the Fed chairman said at a Washington conference called to address the issue. Even in good economic times, perks can be a sensitive issue, raising the eyebrows of employees who feel equally committed to the success of the business. In challenging economic times, and in an era of cost-cutting and employee reductions, perks can create great bitterness among employees who see family members as abusing their positions within the business.
