The connection of residential deck ledgers to MPC floor trusses is not covered by the 2012 IRC that gives fastener requirements for the connection a deck ledger to a solid-sawn house band. The ledger connection is especially difficult when the deck ledger is attached to the side of the truss because only the narrow edge of 2x4 truss chords and webs are present and not suitable for installing the typical 1/2-inch lag screws or bolts. According to Professor Frank Woeste, Virginia Tech University, it is critically important for contractors to verify the existence of a solid-sawn band joist when adding a residential deck because without verification, it’s possible for the ledger connection lag screws to only penetrate the wood sheathing, typically 15/32-inch thick.

There seems to be a shift taking place in the desire to spend hours getting to the lake to find only a few measly hours to relax there. It comes down to both time and price — that little cabin in the woods is damn expensive. Some have decided to forgo the headaches and reinvent their backyards. But as with interiors, a good design foundation should come before the decor: This means focusing on the yard's infrastructure to create a base from which to build a lovely urban retreat.

At its most basic, a deck is an extension of your house. You open your door, walk outside and there you are in what feels like an outdoor room. But let’s be real: Some decks have become much more than that — a manifestation of the homeowner’s aesthetic taste, desire and ego laid out over vast expanses of wood, stone and lighting. Some decks could be mistaken for helipads if helipads had pergolas and open-air kitchens.
