National Deck Competition offers categories for vendor members: wood decking, alternative decking and outdoor living accessories
NADRA
There are three new vendor categories this year in NADRA’s National Deck Competition. Each year we receive phone calls at NADRA Headquarters from manufacturers asking about which categories they can enter. Our answer each year has been “Sorry, the competition is only for builder members, maybe we can add it in the future.” Well, that time is upon us. We would like to encourage all vendor members to take a look at the three new categories below and enter the competition this year.
New Vendor Categories:
- Vendor Wood Deck Project
Vendor Wood Project Category Rules: For distributor, retailer or manufacturer members of wood decking — pressure treated, cedar, redwood, southern pine, ipe, hardwoods, etc. The vendor member must enter the competition, not the builder. Projects may include residential or commercial projects. No price limit.
- Vendor Alternative Deck Project

Housing sales are hoisting the prices of lumber
South Bend Tribune
A slew of shockingly good housing data shook U.S. markets, especially lumber. Reports showed that construction of new homes is rising from the post-recession doldrums and that sales of existing homes increased for the fourth straight month.
Lumber, which is closely tied to the construction industry, has been rising with the restrengthening housing market, reaching a five-month high at $355 per thousand board feet.
Deck support: It's what's beneath the surface that counts
BPT via Timesonline.com
The substructure of your deck is the heart of its durability and the foundation for its aesthetics. Until recently, wood was the go-to material for builders and contractors but many professionals are now switching to steel for its superior structural integrity and design flexibility.

The Associated Press via ABC News
Fewer Americans bought new homes in July, evidence that the housing sector is struggling to gain traction more than five years into the economic recovery.

Designing with wood explores rustic possibilities
The Associated Press via Pensacola News Journal
Working with wood comes naturally to New York interior designer Dan Faires. He grew up in an old farmhouse and has been developing his carpentry skills for much of his life.
So in any house or apartment he occupies, he finds creative ways to decorate with this natural material. To rehab an apartment in Arkansas recently, he covered the dark pine floor with coats of glossy white paint, instantly brightening the room and making it seem larger.
