NADRA's New England Chapter celebrates first Deck for a Soldier build! NADRA Share ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The ribbon cutting will take place at 1 p.m. at the soldier's home. The address is 6 Ruth Ave., Dracut, Mass. If any of the New England Chapter members could get there early, some extra help is needed picking up and getting last minute items in place. We hope to report back to everyone with photos of the completed project and a list of volunteers and donated materials. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this great project. You know who you are! NADRA Rocks!
Lumberyards and deck safety LBM Journal Editor and Publisher, Rick Schumacher Share ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I live in Minnesota, and during this past winter (which delivered many extra helpings of snow), the deck at our cabin collapsed. On closer inspection, the ledger board had rotted, leaving the fasteners nothing to fasten. Fortunately, no one was there at the time. Like many decks, ours is many decades old. Deck safety is a real issue and, as I learned, deck collapses don't just happen to someone else. As the publisher of LBM Journal (a national magazine serving lumberyards and building material dealers) and enthusiastic NADRA member and supporter, the idea came up of producing and distributing a poster on deck safety to our 34,000-plus subscribers—the vast majority of whom sell decking. The goal is for the nation's lumberyards and building material dealers to display the poster in their showrooms—ideally near their decking materials—to call attention to this important topic. After getting the okay from the NADRA Board, we went to work finding sponsors to help make the poster happen. Three companies — Viance Wood Treatment Solutions, Simpson Strong-Tie and Fortress Iron Railing & Fence Systems — stepped forward with financial support. In addition, Simpson Strong-Tie managed the poster's design. The poster, and this important message, will be delivered with the September issue of LBM Journal to our entire circulation. This would not have happened without these sponsors. I want to publicly thank them here for supporting this effort. To further support NADRA's efforts, $3,000 of the sponsorship dollars will be passed through to NADRA. Plus, NADRA will receive 2,000 extra posters to distribute. LBM Journal applauds Team NADRA for its contributions to the industry. We appreciate the opportunity to contribute to such a positive and energized organization. Even the rush to construct buildings for the upcoming World Cup and Olympics in Brazil has led to Ipe decking becoming scarce and more expensive. In addition to supply and demand factors, fluctuating exchange rates and a weakening dollar have contributed to the increased cost of Ipe decking. Even domestic species have had similar price increases. More Deck Safety: 12 injured in deck collapse KUSA-TV Share ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() One moment they were enjoying a Saturday afternoon barbecue. The next moment, 25 people were plummeting about 20 feet to the ground. "It didn't feel unstable at any time," said Sam King, victim. "It was just an instant where it was like - boom!" King was on a second floor deck at home in the Paradise Hills neighborhood just west of Lookout Mountain near Golden, Colo. More
How to get paid fast For Construction Pros Share ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The construction and business used to be easy. All you had to do was design, bid, build and bill. Submitting bids that were clear, complete and competitive would get you more jobs. Doing high quality work, according to the plans and on-time, kept customers happy. And when you submitted bills in a timely manner, you always got paid. But what happened? More The key to better decisions Constructech Share ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Every few years, common buzzwords seem to take hold in the construction-technology landscape. Right now, business-process automation is one of those key phrases generating discussion among construction professionals, as well as the technology-provider community, as a way to improve decision making across an entire project team. Forest Service agrees to void timber contracts The Associated Press via Bloomberg Share ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The U.S. Forest Service is offering to renegotiate timber sale contracts in an effort to save sawmills in the Rocky Mountain region that have been hit hard by bark beetle infestations, the recession and financially unviable agreements. Acting regional forester Jerome Thomas said that sawmills are needed more than ever to help cope with a bark beetle infestation that has ravaged an estimated 41 million acres in the West. More Construction-less recovery not likely Helena Independent Record Share ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Recent news headlines have suggested that the economy will likely recover from "The Great Recession" without the construction sector. This is simply not possible. Unfortunately, the U.S. housing market continues to contract, with home sales declining and inventory offered each month increasing. A 2011 report by the University of Montana's Bureau of Business and Economic Research indicates, "Estimates of real estate valuation and debt-to-equity, suggest that U.S. residential property owners lost another $1.7 trillion in value in 2010, for a total of $9 trillion since the 2006 peak."
