NADRA's annual meeting and National Industry Awards banquet on Sept. 15, drew a sellout crowd. The National Aquarium in Baltimore provided a beautiful venue for deck builders across the country (including one builder from Australia) to meet and mingle throughout four levels of captive sea life. Deck builders were just as colorful with their artistic designs that competed for the first annual National Industry Awards and their heartfelt commitment to NADRA’s community service program, Deck for a Soldier. U.S. President Barack Obama signed a $30 billion small business lending bill into law on Monday, claiming a victory on economic policy for his fellow Democrats ahead of November congressional elections. The law sets up a lending fund for small businesses and includes an additional $12 billion in tax breaks for small companies. More

Small businesses won a record $96.8 billion in federal prime contracts during the government's 2009 fiscal year, yet that was still short of the federal goal, the U.S. Small Business Administration says. Construction employment expanded in 56 out of 337 metropolitan areas between August 2009 and August 2010 according to a new analysis of federal employment data released by the Associated General Contractors of America. US housing starts jump 10.5 percent in August MarketWatch Share
New housing starts surged 10.5 percent in August to the highest level since spring, but the activity was driven by a sharp spike in apartment construction, government data showed. Housing starts rose in August to an annualized rate of 598,000, compared with a revised 0.4 percent increase in July, the Commerce Department reported. Employers can expect to pay nearly 9 percent more for health care costs for their workers in 2011, the highest level in five years, according to a forecast released on Monday. And employees will have to pay more than 12 percent more out of their pockets, according to the report from consulting group Hewitt Associates. The Hewitt report blames higher medical claim costs, an aging population and U.S. healthcare reform. More
