 At DeckExpo Memphis in 2006 I accepted the responsibility to become a member of the board of directors. Looking back now, I realize that I had no idea what was involved but I was honored to represent you and give back to this industry that has done so much for me and my family. There were times for me early in this business where people would question the idea of a company that specialized in decks. I saw NADRA as a way to show that our industry was truly professional. Unhappy with the deteriorating quality of southern pine boardwalk decking installed over the past year, Mayor Jay Gillian said his administration was looking into better alternatives. Last week, three of them appeared on the boardwalk near 12th Street. About a dozen boards each of the new wood alternatives — TimberSIL, Siberian Larch and Bamboo — are screwed in to the substructure and stand out against the splintered, aging southern yellow pine surrounding it.
