NADRA Chapter - now forming in Minnesota!
WOW! Twenty-four individuals from the Deck and Rail Community came together for the Minnesota NADRA formation meeting held at Stork Twin City Testing in St. Paul, Minn., on Nov. 17. The "kick-off" meeting brought deck builders, manufacturers, distributors and industry experts together to discuss the launch of this exciting new Chapter. Sixteen of those attendees are now NADRA members!

Rising materials prices, flat prices for finished projects squeezing hard-hit construction industry

Construction contractors continue to be squeezed by rising prices for key construction materials and flat prices for what they can charge for finished projects, according to an analysis of October Producer Price Index figures released recently by the Associated General Contractors of America. Prices for materials used in construction jumped by 0.6 percent in October and 4.8 percent over the past 12 months, while the price index for finished buildings remained flat. More

Construction on new residential buildings fell 11.7 percent in October, far worse than many analysts had expected and providing fresh evidence that the real estate market is struggling as it enters the traditionally slow winter season. The Commerce Department reported that housing starts fell to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 519,000 last month, a 1.9 percent decline from October 2009. More

Small businesses are bouncing back as access to lending eases and consumers ramp up purchases. This would be welcome news for policy makers struggling to spur the world's largest economy and bring down unemployment stalled near a 26-year high, because small companies account for 60 percent of job creation, according to Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. How to hire with fit in mind
There is a direct correlation between the business culture of a company and its financial success, and people are the drivers of both. With this in mind, when hiring, it's wise to focus more on finding someone who fits into the company culture rather than exclusively looking for certain skills. Try basing hiring decisions 60 percent on fit and 40 percent on skills. This doesn't mean simply hiring someone you like and hoping they can do the job. The goal should be to analyze the candidate's personality and introduce the potential employee to the company's culture, so you both can make the right decision. More
Proposed gas tax increase fires up debate
A task force charged with reining in U.S. debt is proposing a 15 cent per gallon increase in the federal gasoline tax. Federal fuel taxes currently stand at 18.4 cents a gallon for gasoline and 24.4 cents for diesel fuel. The draft proposal, which is included in a package of proposed tax reforms by the co-chairmen of President Obama's fiscal commission released recently, calls for the increase to begin in 2013. More
