Agritourism adapts: Farms make COVID adjustments
AgriNews
Farms across the country have made safety adjustments to adapt to COVID-19 this year.
The NAFDMA International Agritourism Association hosted a virtual roundtable to discuss changes being made.
"The biggest thing we decided was to have increased hand-washing and sanitation stations," said Jeanne Johnson, operations manager at Johnson Farms in Belton, Missouri.

The gentrification of marriage and weddings and the popularity of farm venues
White Hutchinson
Since some of our agritainment/agritourism farm clients offer weddings and wedding receptions, I dug into the data to see what trends I could find for that segment of their businesses. We are currently working with one farm with a large renovated barn and picturesque outdoor area to develop renovation plans for some of their facilities and management and marketing enhancements to grow their wedding and other group business.

Hillsdale Daily News
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has proclaimed October as Michigan Agritourism Month to recognize the economic and social benefits of agritourism to the state's farms and communities.
The month is a celebration to acknowledge and experience the vast, integrated network of family farmers, processors, wholesalers and retailers who produce a safe and nutritious food supply, as well as provide fun and unique farm experiences for visitors.

Will Halloween be able to top the spookiness of the rest of 2020?
Ohio's Country Journal
It is hard to imagine that Halloween could be any spookier than any of the rest of 2020, but with the holiday falling on a Saturday and a full moon (a rare second-in-the-month full blue moon in fact) this year, anything is possible.
Halloween candy sales have been trending up, but costume sales have dramatically tumbled. I guess there is no need to buy a mask when you are already wearing one.

Managing an orchard through thick and thin
Lancaster Farming
COVID-19 impact has not been the biggest challenge for one York County, Pennsylvania, orchard. Dan and Karen Paulus have faced other emergencies since taking over as owners of Paulus Mt. Airy Orchard in Biglerville in 1999.
The orchard is flourishing, with apples and peach trees on 75 of 150 acres. It serves as a tourist attraction during the fall season and is home to favorite produce from every season.

Ways to keep agritourism relevant through the COVID-19 pandemic
Growing Produce
I've always viewed "agritourism" as a set of marketing/promotional activities that retailing direct marketers have always used to attract more customers to the farm. Today many define the term as encompassing all direct-to-consumer marketing activities.
That's probably a "chicken or egg came first" discussion that could fill pages. But during this COVID-19 pandemic, many quickly realized — especially those in the government regulatory community — that agritourism is a complex, diverse, challenging, yet economically significant part of today's agriculture industry.

Cover crop or cover photo, sunflowers are finding a fit on more farms
Ohio's Country Journal
For use as cover crops, sunflowers have a robust root system allowing them to scavenge nutrients and they are also good for mycorrhizal fungi growth in the soil. The loftiest blooms around attract numerous beneficial insects and can lead to excellent honey production in nearby beehives as well. Their tall and strong stalks offer opportunities for vine plants in a cover crop cocktail to climb.

'It sustains us:' How the Gentry Farm morphed into 30 years of agritourism
Tennessean
It's hard to miss Cindy Gentry with her bright red bandana.
Despite her face covering, parents and children waved to her as they meandered around Gentry's farm on a sunny October afternoon. This month is the first time the farm has opened its gates to visitors since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Agritourism offers new opportunities for young farmers
Farm Bureau
Incorporating agritourism into a farm or ranch offers numerous benefits, but it’s best to start this new aspect of your business gradually. That’s according to a trio of young farmers and ranchers who recently addressed grassroots Farm Bureau members about their real-world experiences with agritourism.
Kathie Iverson of Western Legacy Farm and Ranch in Hurricane, Utah, offers a variety of activities for visitors to enjoy, including u-pick cherries, cattle drives, farm camp for kids, a corn maze, a pumpkin patch and a Sleepy Hollow Halloween fall event.

Bruno Ferreira, who earned his Ph.D. last fall in parks, recreation and tourism management, wanted to raise awareness about the farmers behind the chefs, in hopes of helping the farmers expand their businesses.
The series of videos he helped create, called "Fork to Farmer," can be found on the YouTube page of NC State Extension.
