Governor Cuomo announces new state guidance for agritourism businesses as fall approaches

From Sept. 1: Governor Andrew M. Cuomo recently announced new state guidance for agritourism businesses as New York State enters the Fall season. The businesses, which include corn mazes, pick-your-own fruit and vegetable operations, hayrides and haunted houses, are considered low-risk outdoor arts and entertainment and are permitted to operate under New York's NY Forward guidance.

Developing a waiver of liability for on-farm tours and other activities

From June 23: Farmers are being encouraged to develop liability waivers for on-farm tours and other activities. Executive Director of the Sonoma County Farm Bureau, Tawny Tesconi recommends that growers meet with legal counsel to develop a waiver specific to their operation. Tesconi noted that as health officials begin allowing more on-farm tours, tastings, and other activities, growers would be best served by protecting themselves with a waiver.

Liability releases for agritourism activities — don't fall prey to myths

From March 31: Owners and operators of farms that offer certain agritourism activities to the public, such as petting zoos, corn mazes, and horse-drawn hay or sleigh rides, sometimes assume that liability waivers or releases are not worth their attention. Many operators fall prey to common myths surrounding these documents.

Hipcamp, the Airbnb of camping: Farmers find new source of income renting land for outdoor stays

From Nov. 2: Maryland farmers are finding a new source of income through a vacation rental platform. Hipcamp is similar to Airbnb, which allows people to rent out their homes, apartments and other private quarters for short stays.
But as the name suggests, Hipcamp focuses on camping accommodations.
The company was started in 2013, and slowly grew in popularity out West before making its way to the East Coast.
It has grown in popularity since the onset of COVID-19 and the creation of the socially distant vacation.

Cider mills and corn mazes may look different this year

From Aug. 21: Cider Mills are a favorite fall festivity for many families and the fun may still go on this year, but things will look a little different at places like Uncle Johns Cider Mill.
Uncle Johns owner Dede Beck said, "COVID's been a struggle obviously for everybody, but we're also embracing it because its giving us an opportunity to kind of go back to our roots. We are really focusing on what we can do here."

Pumpkin picking is a popular pandemic pick-me-up

From Oct. 6: U-pick farms — the choose-your-own-fruit-and-vegetable patches that draw droves each summer and fall — have been especially busy this year. Some farms have been so picked over that they've had to close their fields for a day or longer to let new fruit ripen.
With apple-and-pumpkin season in full swing, that popularity is continuing, and u-picks have adapted accordingly.

Farmers want their agritourist spot on highway signs

From Jan. 16: Carolyn Raasch's family still grows corn and soybeans in Liberty, Missouri, but they are one of at least 500 Missouri farms that have started seeking secondary income in what's called agritourism.
And without road signs, people like Raasch are worried drivers might not know what they're passing by.
"When I go to other states I look for the blue signs there's something really cool down that road and maybe I need to get off the highway and explore," Raasch said.
