Pursuing certification through the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating system can create major challenges for maintenance and engineering managers. The task is even greater when the institutional and commercial facilities date back to the days of Thomas Jefferson. "It certainly presents a challenge for us to access the HVAC and lighting systems to repair and replace them without causing any further damage to the building," says Ryan Taylor, zone maintenance superintendent for central grounds at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, whose responsibilities include many of the original buildings designed by Jefferson.

Facility maintenance does not have to be a 4-letter word

Diet is a quintessential "four-letter word" — a phrase that in years past often referred to expletives. Obviously that's a joke, but dieting to most people is no laughing matter. Why? Because first of all they require the resolve to begin and, secondly, a lifestyle change. Within our industry, we have our own set of "four-letter words," although most are known by acronyms. Like diets, these too take a certain resolve to start implementing or tracking and, perhaps most importantly, they require the lifestyle change, referred to as a culture change.

Group booking recovery expected to continue

As 2013 closed, group business finally showed some positive trends, and advanced-booking data from TravelClick and several hotel owners show that group business will continue to grow through 2014. "2013 was kind of a weak year in group through the first three quarters," said Tim Hart, executive VP of business intelligence at TravelClick. "Really in October and November we saw the pace of new group sales over a 30-day period start to grow consecutively."
