Have your roofs got you covered?

Roofs protect our facilities and the assets they hold from punishing elements such as wind, rain, hail, sleet, snow and excessive heat. Although they appear to quietly endure extreme conditions, they actually may be trying to communicate their need for help. Those extreme conditions contribute to deterioration, which increases the risk of exposure beneath their covering. Given the long, harsh winter that much of the nation just endured, it is time to inspect and protect our roofs from further damage while repairing what those cruel elements have chipped away over the winter months.

A shock to demand—such as a terrorist attack or another financial crisis—rather than overbuilding might be the only thing to dampen the strong performance of the hotel industry, panelists said during a recent roundtable at Michigan State University. As is the case since 2008 when the first such ranking was published, Los Angeles sits atop the Environmental Protection Agency's annual list of U.S. cities that are doing the most to improve energy efficiency — at least when it comes to how many local buildings have received Energy Star credentials. This is, after all, the city that took on the world's largest LED lighting efficiency and energy savings project five years ago and is saving literally millions on electricity as a result.
