One of the biggest challenges in both school and airports is heavy traffic, which can come with unpredictable peaks. Because cleaning the rooms is difficult when they’re in use, many restrooms incorporate design features that can help them remain clean and looking new, Sweet says.
To start, durable stall partitions and joints are critical. In airports, for instance, people tend to move quickly, usually while carting bulky luggage. "Often, they don't have a lot of concern for the state they leave a facility in," Sweet says. The materials chosen must hold up.

Executive buildings are becoming more attractive to independent hoteliers as conversion opportunities as land costs continue to rise and barriers to entry remain high in several major cities.
"What we've found over and over again is that the price of entry into any major city is so high to build brand new. If you have the ability to pick up an existing property that is underutilized, your cost to entry is much lower and you can bring the hotel to market much quicker," said Gary Johnson, president of architectural firm Cambridge Seven.

Facilities managers are all too aware of the challenges inherent in operating restrooms in commercial settings: fluctuations in traffic, heavy use and abuse, and privacy concerns. These challenges are magnified in some venues, such as schools and airports. "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" is a mantra with which most are familiar. Facilities may even put these three Rs into practice. But could there be too much emphasis on the last R, focusing on the sense of pride around a facility's recycling efforts? Effective Jan. 1, 2018, China banned the import of 24 recyclable materials due to receiving too many contaminated recyclables. Although U.S. congresspeople have called upon the government to repeal it, there are no signs that China will reverse this policy that has left parts of the world in a recycling panic.

For 2018, National Lightning Safety Awareness Week is June 24-30, and the Lightning Protection Institute (LPI) has designated Protecting "People, Property and Places" as the focus of this year's safety campaign. With summer officially begun on June 21, LPI and partner organizations are reminding organizations and individuals that more people are killed and injured by lightning during the summer months than any other time of year. LPI points out that many lightning deaths and injuries in the U.S. happen when people simply opt for convenience instead of disrupting outdoor plans.

Facility managers and building owners who require a minimum of 15 years and up to 30 years or more from their flooring investment will find the shift to life-cycle cost analysis (LCCA) to be an economic advantage. LCCA can provide data to determine whether a floor is financially sustainable from a long-term maintenance perspective and, depending on the findings, support the decision for selection (or de-selection) of flooring materials.

Water is often thought of as an infinite resource that can be replenished over time, so it tends to take a backseat to energy conservation when it comes to green building certification, notes Drew Shula, Founder and Principal of Verdical Group, a green building consultancy.
Existing green building designations perpetuate the focus on energy. LEED allocates three times as many possible points to energy efficiency than water conservation, incentivizing project teams to focus more of their efforts on energy points.
