An airplane turbine in your hotel? Not quite but the microturbines now being installed in hotels around the globe are smaller versions of an airplane turbine. Microturbines are reliable cores of combined cooling, heating, and power (CCHP) systems, generate one-tenth the emissions of an internal combustion engine and are helping hotels save big time in energy and dollars.
Darren Jamison, CEO of Capstone Turbine, a leading manufacturer of microturbines, says a microturbine is like a power plant in a box. "The efficiency comes from how the combustion is processed," he says. Microturbines are highly efficient, quiet, require no oil or antifreeze, and can run on a variety of gaseous or liquid fuels.

The Environmental Protection Agency announced new limits to formaldehyde exposure, ending a battle of more than five years to regulate a toxic chemical commonly found throughout the home.
Until now, the federal government has not regulated formaldehyde, a known carcinogen, in wood products. Formaldehyde is commonly used as a glue in products like flooring and furniture.

Security challenges continue to grow in the smart facility and throughout today's increasingly connected world. These challenges must be addressed in ways that combat threats while delivering a more satisfying and convenient, on-the-go experience. The goal is to make facility security more pervasive and personalized, seamless, and adaptive to the user rather than the other way around. Achieving this goal will not only make people safer, but will also accelerate innovation in how building services are offered and delivered.

Net-zero-energy buildings employ the latest materials, technologies, practices and controls in order to not only minimize energy usage, but also produce as much or more energy than the building consumes. As these buildings become more popular, HVACR manufacturers are working to create highly efficient products and systems to help meet these ambitious performance goals.

Hotel News Now
A common question we hear at CBRE Hotels' Americas Research is "When will the current up cycle end?" Some inquisitive types go so far as to ask, "How will it end?"
At the "end" of the past two up cycle phases, the peak rapidly dropped into a deep trough precipitated by tragic and disruptive shocks (i.e., 9/11, financial crisis) that made people hesitant to travel. In the absence of catastrophic events, hotel demand usually falls victim to the natural death of the up cycle.

Window replacement isn’t cheap, but neither are existing windows that are out of date and inefficient. The opportunity to upgrade comes around infrequently – possibly as part of a broader energy conservation plan funded by one financial package – so owners must maximize their return.
"Windows are an important contributor to the building envelope and can be an integral part of energy conservation strategies," explains Kerry Haglund, Research Fellow for the Center for Sustainable Building Research at the University of Minnesota, in his report "Window Selection Methodologies and Optimization in High-Performance Commercial Buildings."

Facility Executive
Facility managers are often considered a jack of all trades, as they are responsible for maintaining the quality of a building and ensuring the safety of employees, patrons, and other occupants on a daily basis—all while adhering to budgetary restraints. This often results in pest control efforts being placed toward the bottom of the to-do list, done on a shoestring budget, or even forgotten altogether. However, given the considerable consequences of an infestation, facility managers must be prepared to take action at the first sign of a pest problem.

Is the performance of your facilities manager slipping? Are you met with frustration instead of enthusiasm each time you give them more responsibility? Have they been making a lot of mistakes lately that have you questioning their qualifications and abilities? It could be that they’ve grown lazy, or maybe they’ve become complacent and don’t feel the need to work as hard anymore. Perhaps they’re unhappy with their job and considering other employment opportunities. But more likely, there are other factors at play.

The commercial building environment is focusing increasingly on the internet of things and the ways in which systems that control functions such as heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, refrigeration, lighting and security will interact with central servers. Using data, the systems will produce automated responses such as light or temperature adjustments as well as allow for greater data insights into building performance.
