A new study from pest control company Orkin finds that eight of 10 hotels have dealt with bed bugs in the past year, and 40 percent have treated for bed bugs in the past month. In addition to revealing the frequency of bed bug infestations, the study also revealed that hotels spend an average of $6,383 per bed bug incident.
Orkin partnered with The Bantam Group, a market research firm, to survey hoteliers nationwide on the impact of bed bugs on a hotel’s bottom line.

No workplace is immune from security threats. It's doubtful that a technically perfect security system exists; however, the trick is to make sure the most important parts of the facility have been considered, and that protocols are customized to provide the best fit. The Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT) is a voluntary program focused on improving the security of private companies' supply chains with respect to terrorism.

In real life, you probably don't launder your sheets every day, recklessly tear through individually wrapped snacks and toiletries, single-handedly consume a 12-pack of bottled water or let the shower run for 30 minutes.
But forgoing real life in favor of indulgence and escapism is often considered acceptable — or even expected — on vacation. This goes far beyond not replacing your towels and linens every day, which has become largely ubiquitous.

Following the Grenfell Tower tragedy in London and the 2014 Lacrosse apartment blaze in Melbourne, Australia, fire safety within multistorey buildings has been the subject of considerable public attention.

Modular design and construction is a growing trend in hospitality. Already popular in Europe, modular hotels are gaining ground in the Americas, and could become the norm in a few years.
In the United States, designers, general contractors and developers have given modular construction mixed reviews due to potential complexities and lack of familiarity with its products.

Facility Executive
Facility management executives can realize dramatic reductions in energy consumption and operating costs by installing high performance equipment. But without proper maintenance and monitoring programs, those cost and consumption reductions could eventually fade away.
Inevitably, the performance of high efficiency equipment will begin to decline due to environmental factors as well as normal wear and tear. Standard efficiency equipment will degrade as well but the performance of high efficiency systems will suffer more rapidly without proper maintenance.

Think Airbnb as one prime example. It’s now is worth about US$30 billion — about the same as the Hilton and Hyatt groups combined.

Buildings
Whether you are in charge of construction for a new building or assigned to retrofit an existing one, there are many points of emphasis when managing a construction crew.
Work safety is among the top concerns. Improving security is also atop of the minds of managers. TrueLook argues that construction companies can ease these anxieties by implementing cameras on the jobsite.

In water conservation and management, the retail and hospitality industries face a unique set of challenges. A hotel guest, after all, has very little incentive to turn the air-conditioning unit off when he leaves or to take short showers in the morning. He's not paying the bill, so what's it matter to him?
That type of behavior, combined with the pressing needs of landscape maintenance and the aesthetics required to attract people to a business, is enough cause for worry among facility managers ... and their accountants.

You may not know it, but federal rules are hurting energy efficiency projects— laws created decades ago that still have precedent today.
A recently released white paper from New Buildings Institute (NBI) highlights how federal preemption rules construct huge barriers when using energy codes to achieve higher energy efficiency in buildings and communities.
Originally setting the bar for energy reduction, these decades-old federal laws set the national standards of energy efficiency, which have counteractively prohibited states and cities from setting standards that are more ambitious.
