How facility managers handle increasing workload, shrinking budget, staff

Ask facility managers what their biggest concern about the job is, and the odds are good that the response will focus on not having enough resources or the ever-increasing workload. Those two concerns consistently top the list of challenges that facility managers face, according to Building Operating Management's annual FM Pulse survey; this year, 30 percent of respondents say their No. 1 concern is not having enough resources.

Transparent film keeps windows ice-free

With the winter months quickly approaching, ice will be here to stay; but a team of researchers at Rice University has developed a technology that could ensure ice doesn't stay on your windows. The film, made from graphene nanoribbons covered with a thin layer of polyurethane, can be painted on any glass or plastic surface and conducts both heat and electricity.

Study: Eco-friendly hotels save green

Hotel owners can save some green by going eco-friendly. That is the consensus of three studies by Cornell University professors who studied whether there is an advantage to operating environmentally friendly hotels over traditional hotels. The first study found that guests are not willing to pay more to stay at a hotel with an environmental designation.

Zero energy buildings to become big business in future

Navigant Research has released a new study that concludes that these high-performance properties will be big business in the future, with the zero energy building market's annual global revenue skyrocketing from an estimated $639 million in 2014 to $1.4 trillion in 2035. It won't be a smooth road. There will be challenges as the existence of zero energy buildings goes on the rise, the name being one of them.

Moving in a simple up and back configuration, this constant flow of water wasted a lot of energy. White House unveils new solar, energy efficiency steps

Ahead of the International Summit on Climate Change, the White House unveiled 50-plus new public and private efforts to boost the use of two nonpolluting power sources: Solar and energy efficiency. It announced US$68 million in federal funds for 540 renewable power and energy efficiency projects in rural areas, including 240 solar ones.
