Hotels use online reviews as blueprint for renovations

When it was time for Omni Hotels and Resorts to start a new round of renovations, executives made a point of installing more electrical outlets and better bathrooms. The impetus for those upgrades? Complaints from travelers on review websites like TripAdvisor. "They certainly are not shy," said Jon Hunter, vice president for operations at Omni Hotels and Resorts.

New air conditioner standards to yield big savings

As part of President Barack Obama's plan to cut 3 billion metric tons of carbon emissions by 2030, the Department of Energy has proposed new energy efficiency standards for commercial rooftop air conditioners, which cool about half of the total commercial floor space in the U.S. The new standards would require an energy use reduction around 30 percent for units sold starting in 2019.

Hoteliers add DIY tech to meeting space

Guests attending meetings — and those running them — want to have control over technology in a hotel's meeting space. This do-it-yourself trend has encouraged some hoteliers to reevaluate the design, layout and technology each property offers, sources said. "The most important thing is people want to control (the meeting) by themselves," said Barry Goldstein, chief revenue officer at Dolce Hotels and Resorts. "It used to be that there was always someone who had to set it up, plug it in."

Human error causes as much as two-thirds of all critical environment failures and unplanned downtime. And failures related to human error can increase if risk mitigation measures are not in place, especially if there is a significant rate of turnover in operations and maintenance staff. Energy efficiency investment projected to increase

According to a recent survey of leaders in energy efficiency from business and government sectors conducted by Schneider Electric, up to 56 percent expect to invest more into energy efficiency than they did last year. While 63 percent of respondents had invested in energy efficiency projects, 64 percent reported that real cost savings was the driving force behind the investment decision.

Breakthrough in LED construction increases efficiency by 57 percent

With LEDs being the preferred long-lasting, low-energy method for replacing less efficient forms of lighting, their uptake has dramatically increased over the past few years. However, despite their luminous outputs having increased steadily over that time, they still fall behind more conventional forms of lighting in terms of brightness.
