From May 19: Some hotel executives believe new federal overtime rules from the U.S. Department of Labor designed to grow wages and increase employment will hurt both employers and employees.
The main thrust of the new overtime rule is the increase in the white-collar salary threshold required to deem employees exempt from overtime pay. That threshold jumps from $23,660 to $47,476 a year starting Dec. 1.

From Nov. 22: A federal judge in Texas issued a nationwide injunction against an Obama administration regulation expanding by millions the number of workers who would be eligible for time-and-a-half overtime pay.
The regulation was scheduled to take effect on Dec. 1. It would raise the salary limit below which workers automatically qualified for overtime pay to $47,476 from $23,660.

From May 30: Because they're found in almost every hotel room, maintaining HVAC systems should be a priority for hoteliers, housekeeping, and maintenance staff. According to Don Fort, a national quality and training manager for LG, an HVAC system can last up to 12 years with the proper care, four times the lifespan of a neglected unit. Fort spoke with LODGING and shared three maintenance tips that keep hotel HVAC systems in top working order.

From July 13: The installation of fiber cabling to hotel guestrooms is a growing trend in the industry, but hoteliers need to know if and when it's the right time to switch from copper to fiber cables, sources said.
"At this time, the benefit of running fiber depends on the hotel," Martin Thornros, principal at tech consultancy firm Convergent Services, said. "If you follow hotel technology, there are a lot of things that sound really good, but there's more sex appeal than there is substance behind it."

From July 20: Legionellosis is a respiratory disease caused by Legionella bacteria. Sometimes the bacteria cause a serious type of pneumonia (lung infection) called Legionnaires' disease. The bacteria can also cause a less serious infection called Pontiac fever that has symptoms similar to a mild case of the flu. Unfortunately, Legionella bacteria make frequent appearances in hotels. Legionella was discovered after an outbreak in 1976 among people who went to a Philadelphia convention of the American Legion. The convention took place at the Bellevue-Stratford Hotel and 34 people died.

From April 26: Hotel employees' ability to recognize problem pests has never been higher, which is the key to catching an infestation before it grows, according to Patricia Hottel, technical director for McCloud Services, a pest management solutions provider. "I can recall going to a hotel and showing staff what a bedbug looks like and they thought it was a tick," she said. "Those days are behind us."

From March 2: The U.S. Green Building Council released a week ago its LEED in "Motion: Hospitality" report, which showcases "tremendous" industry growth in green building and defines the scale-up opportunities for the hospitality sector. More than 109 million square feet of hotel space is currently LEED certified, and the report highlights some of the most impressive LEED-certified hotels throughout the world.
