Data has always been an inherent part of the educational process — a child's age, correlated with her grade level, tracked to specific reading or math skills that align with that grade, measured by grades and tests which rank her according to her peers. Today this data is ever more critical. Education professionals seek understanding from what the data reflect on the teacher's role and influence, evaluating student outcomes across classrooms. Parents seek similar measures on individual K-12 schools and districts, and desperately seek insight into the value of education at individual colleges and universities to justify the cost or debt incurred.

The survey of 1,000 Likely U.S. Voters was conducted on May 23-24, 2016 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95 percent level of confidence.

The Rhode Island Senate approved legislation sponsored by Sen. Adam J. Satchell to phase in seat belts on school buses, and require school districts to adopt implementation plans that include bus evacuation drills. The legislation would require that all new school buses purchased or leased in Rhode Island be equipped with seat belts for the driver and every passenger seat. Upon the purchase of one or more school buses equipped with seat belts, each school district would be required to prepare a plan for the implementation and use of seat belts, including evacuation drills in case of emergency, within one year of the receipt of the new buses.

There's been a lively debate recently about funding gaps inside districts between schools with low levels of state and local aid and their wealthier counterparts. But is a major factor in intradistrict inequality being overlooked by many people? If you ask Bruce Baker, a Rutgers University professor who studies school finance, the answer is yes.

If you're a principal, you likely spend time working with parents and other family members of your students. Too often, much of that time is negative, coming after a major discipline problem or crisis. On the positive side, another critical part of the principal's job is leading a coordinated school-wide effort to interact with families in ways that support students, families, the school and the larger community. Every student in your building has a family and comes from a community, both of which influence the student. And teachers and administrators interact with families and the community every day — sometimes in direct ways, sometimes indirectly.

A system that allows parents to keep track of their children and whether they made it off and on the school bus has expanded into New Jersey, with Vineland adopting Zonar's Z Pass this year. Vineland Public Schools began using Z Pass at five of its elementary and preschool facilities. By September, the district plans on using the service at all of its schools — with the exception of the high school. "It helps give parents a peace of mind and know where their kids are," said Joseph Callavini, transportation coordinator for the district.

School is out for the summer. But when students return to class, there could be better protections in place, not just when they're on the school bus, but when they step off the bus. In November of 2015, 5-year-old Maliyah Steadman was hit by an SUV moments after she stepped off her Caddo Parish school bus.

While many educators now recognize that "noncognitive" factors that affect how a student thinks about his or her abilities are important to learning academic content, there's little consensus about how teachers can help build those qualities. Some districts are trying to include noncognitive factors in measures of school effectiveness, while other schools focus on certain character qualities as part of their mission.

Amid a budget season that has seen cuts recommended to the School Department's proposed budget by both the mayor and the Ways and Means Committee, administrators think some money — about $150,000 — can be saved if the department's transportation policies are more strictly enforced. But, they told a school board subcommittee, doing so could have a variety of adverse effects on the district's operations and student safety.
