NASW fully supports the Eviction Crisis Act, bipartisan legislation introduced in December in the Senate that would create tools to help end the nation’s eviction epidemic. Developed and championed by the Opportunity Starts at Home campaign, the legislation would include an Emergency Assistance Fund to “test, evaluate, and expand proven interventions to help low-income households facing housing instability due to an unexpected economic shock.” NASW CEO Angelo McClain says the legislation will help state and local governments to develop innovative programs that will lead to housing stability for low-income families.
In December the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit struck down a central provision of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), ruling that the ACA’s individual mandate, which requires individuals to have health insurance coverage, is unconstitutional. In doing so, the court ignores the landmark ruling by the Supreme Court in 2012 which upheld the individual mandate. Instead, the Fifth Circuit sent the case back to a federal district judge in Texas to re-examine whether the ACA can continue without the key provision of the individual mandate. This judge in 2018 deemed the entire ACA unconstitutional. The Fifth Circuit has asked the lower court to provide a more in-depth analysis of its 2018 decision (described in this NASW Practice Alert). NASW will continue to closely follow developments in any challenges to the ACA and work in coalition with partner organizations to advocate for health insurance coverage and health care access for social workers and consumers.

Presented in conjunction with the Commission for Case Manager Certification (CCMC)
Social factors play a profound role in an individual’s physical, emotional, and financial health. Poverty is among those conditions caused by a person’s particular social determinants, and the treatment as an environmental medical condition requires intervention based on science and access to viable, reliable support systems, as well as ensuring that individuals have a clear understanding of what recovery looks like in their lives. Case managers are the connectors for clients whose health depends on ensuring these essential environmental needs are met. In this webinar, the speaker will share evidence-based strategies for improving outcomes for those who suffer from poverty.
The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) has awarded grants for both the Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP) and the Geriatrics Academic Career Awards (GACA) program. Both grants enhance the capacity of the health care workforce to serve older adults. Five GWEP grants are led by social workers. Two social workers are among the GACA grantees. Find information on all HRSA workforce grants.

Smoking and consumption of sugary beverages fell to new lows in Philadelphia in 2018, cancer death rates continued to inch downward and teen health indicators improved. That’s the good news. But the latest annual "Health of the City" report also shows heart disease and cancer remain the leading causes of death, with blacks and Hispanics disproportionately affected — a disparity that directly correlates with poverty.
