You may be noticing a sudden surge in advertisements about the negative effects of tobacco. As a result of a lawsuit that the U.S. Department of Justice brought against tobacco companies, asserting that they intentionally hid the health effects of smoking, companies were ordered in 2006 to issue "corrective statements" about the health implications of tobacco use. Eleven years later, the ads are now running in national news outlets, including television and newspapers.

Supervision requirements for social workers seeking to obtain a state social work license are becoming complex, particularly for clinical licensure, and may create complications for social workers. In rural areas, social workers may encounter difficulties identifying an appropriate supervisor in their region. Changes to state law or regulations may generate confusion during the transition period. Issues sometimes occur when there is not a good fit between the social worker and the supervisor. This "Legal Issue of the Month" article provides examples of these dilemmas, identifies possible steps to prevent unexpected conflicts, and offers suggestions for systemic changes to improve the supervision and licensing process for social workers across the country.

In sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), youths (23 years or younger)—who account for almost half the population—are particularly vulnerable to poverty and exclusion from financial markets and intermediaries. In addition, a significant factor in the financial instability of the region appears to be the economic functioning of its youths. In recent years, social work interventions throughout the region have focused on investing in the economic functioning of youths. This study looked at baseline data from one such intervention in Kenya, using the financial capabilities framework to evaluate the factors related to youths' saving behaviors.
NASW calls on Congress and the Trump administration to support federal
funding that provides resources for social work and social work education to
foster a workforce that meets the holistic needs of the United States. Health
Resources and Service Administration's Title VII Health Professions programs
are crucial to support interprofessional education of social workers interested
in careers in health social work. The Behavioral Health Workforce Education
and Training for Professionals Program has been vital to social work by
supporting efforts to expand the behavioral health workforce to serve children,
adolescents, and transitional-age youths in integrated settings. Social workers
must be included in future competitions to ensure the pipeline of qualified
professionals serving this important population remains available.
