NASW and its D.C. Metro Chapter oppose the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS's) decision to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for El Salvador. The action is misguided and could lead to disturbing humanitarian consequences. In the Washington, D.C., metro area alone, there are more than 30,000 Salvadorans who will be directly impacted by this decision. Compounding the action is that the Trump administration plans to cancel TPS for Haiti in 2019. NASW condemns Trump's racially charged and demeaning remarks about El Salvador, Haiti, and African nations in his statements about his preferences for which racial and ethnic groups should be allowed into the United States.

Incarcerated individuals, particularly women, experience high rates of mental health and substance use disorders, potentially placing them at an increased risk for homelessness. This study examined factors associated with anticipated postjail homelessness among men and women incarcerated in an urban county jail. Participants were categorized into three groups on the basis of scores of screening measures for substance misuse and mental illness: (1) substance use disorder only, (2) serious mental illness or co-occurring substance use disorder (SMI/COD), and (3) no disorder. Gender differences within the three groups were examined, and logistic regressions were used to assess factors associated with anticipated postjail homelessness.

Every day, social workers across this country provide a wide range of services in increasingly complex environments without proper safety training. Unfortunately, too many social workers have been the targets of verbal and physical assaults, and, tragically, some have even lost their lives while performing their job responsibilities. NASW encourages social workers to review established guidelines for social worker safety and to support passage of the Social Worker Safety Act of 2017.
Access reports examining issues related to the work of social workers, including how to serve people who have complex needs and how public agencies and other organizations deliver health and human services.
The opening plenary session at the 2017 Annual Conference of the Society for Social Work and Research, which focused on ensuring healthy youth development, highlighted the need to include young people as partners in research and evaluation. In doing so, the conference participants joined the voices of a growing group of social work scholars committed to youth participation and engagement, who have also highlighted the importance of youth voice in the development of prevention strategies and programming that are aligned with the lived experience of young people. Presenting four unique social work efforts designed to harness the power of youth voice, this article shines a spotlight on the role of social work research and practice in harnessing the power of youth participation in efforts of promote healthy youth development. This article concludes by illustrating the benefits of youth engagement for young people, communities, and researchers.
Although women constitute 51 percent of the
population of the United States, they experience continuing disparate treatment
and a widening gender gap in earnings compared to their male counterparts.
Household income varies dramatically and women and women-headed
households are more likely to live in poverty. Violence against women is an
ongoing challenge that can trigger income and food insecurity for women
and their children. Enacting pay equity legislation will not only revive the
economy, it will also address discriminatory wage practices that create
long-term effects for women and their families and systematic poverty. Wage
discrimination means women earn less throughout their lifetimes and are
more challenged during retirement. Children are affected when women
cannot adequately provide financial resources for their families.
