Title: Social Justice Priorities in the United States
Presenter: Melvin Wilson, LCSW, MBA, Senior Manager, Office of Social Justice and Human Rights, National Association of Social Workers
Register
Last week, NASW, in conjunction with the Canadian Association of Social Workers (CASW), presented a live webinar on NASW’s five social justice priorities – voter’s rights, criminal justice/juvenile justice, environmental justice, immigration, and economic justice – and how NASW is addressing these injustices. Learn about the role of NASW chapters in working with NASW national to respond to social justice priorities and how NASW and other American organizations have worked in coalition to bring about meaningful changes in national policies and practices that perpetuate social injustices among ethnic minorities, low-income families, immigrants, and other vulnerable populations.
NASW and the Brady Center are collaborating on gun safety programs that can reduce gun deaths in the home caused by suicide, domestic violence, and accident and injury. As primary responders in family fire situations, social workers can encourage and support family fire prevention best practices, such as safe storage of guns in the home and Extreme Risk Protection Orders.

The Health and Aging Policy Fellows Program (not affiliated with NASW) invites social workers to apply for the 2019-2020 program year. The program, which is supported by the Atlantic Philanthropies, the John A. Hartford Foundation, and West Health, equips professionals to influence the development and implementation of health policies that affect older adults. The program offers two options: a residential option, consisting of 9 to 12 months in the District of Columbia or at a state agency, or a one-year nonresidential option within the applicant’s current organization (including the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs). Informational calls for potential applicants will be held through April 2, 2019; applications are due by April 15, 2019.
