Kick off Social Work Month, March, by participating in NASW's scheduled Thunderclap on March 1. A thunderclap is an organized crowdsourcing tool for releasing a flood of tweets and posts at the same time with the same message across social media channels. NASW's Thunderclap is set for 7:30 a.m. ET on March 1, 2018. Sign up before March 1 for the Thunderclap to promote our profession and to let others know that social workers are leaders, advocates, and champions.
The Geriatrics Workforce and Caregiver Enhancement Act (H.R. 3713) establishes formal funding for the Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP), the only federally funded program to enhance workforce capacity in aging. H.R. 3713 also reestablishes the Geriatric Academic Career Awards (GACA) program, a previously funded program for developing academic clinical educators specializing in aging. All social work practitioners and students are eligible for training through GWEP (available at 44 sites in 29 states), and clinical social workers are eligible for GACA.
The Eldercare Workforce Alliance (EWA), of which NASW is a member, worked with Representatives Janice Schakowsky (D-IL), Doris Matsui (D-CA), and David B. McKinley (R-WV) to introduce the bill. In late January NASW sent a letter of support to the original bill sponsors. Use NASW's advocacy alert to urge your Congressional representative to support H.R. 3713 today.

In December 2017 the Eldercare Workforce Alliance (EWA), of which NASW is a member, recognized Congressional Representative Janice Schakowsky (D-IL) with an Award of Honor for her decades of leadership and commitment to strengthening the eldercare workforce. Most recently, Rep. Schakowsky demonstrated that leadership by introducing the bipartisan Geriatrics Workforce and Caregiver Enhancement Act (H.R. 3713), which NASW supports. NASW Illinois Chapter member Robyn Golden, who has worked with Rep. Schakowsky for years and is, herself, a strong advocate for the eldercare workforce and for older adults, presented the award on behalf of EWA.

The County Schools Mental Health Coalition, a collaborative among six independent school districts, was established to promote a coordinate and multidisciplinary initiative to implement a scientifically based model of assessment and prevention. This conceptual article discusses the model and describes the process and unique partnership approach to improving adolescent and youth functioning. The partnership includes a triannual countywide screening for all school-age youths, a common reporting process at multiple levels, evidence-based treatments mapped onto risk factors, and professional supports to assist school-based problem-solving teams to identify and provide scientifically based supports for all students as well as at-risk and in-risk youths across universal, selective, and indicated levels. Implementation activities across 53 schools using the processes are briefly described and authors provide case examples at each level to discuss preliminary impact. Discussion focuses on lessons learned from the early stages of this communitywide coalition to support youths and how the approach embodies the national school social work model and reflects the intent of national policies like Every Student Succeeds Act and the grand challenge to foster healthy development for all youths in schools.

Every day, social workers across this country provide a wide range of services in increasingly complex environments without proper safety training. Unfortunately, too many social workers have been the targets of verbal and physical assaults, and, tragically, some have even lost their lives while performing their job responsibilities. NASW encourages social workers to review established guidelines for social worker safety and to support passage of the Social Worker Safety Act of 2017.
Access reports examining issues related to the work of social workers, including how to serve people who have complex needs and how public agencies and other organizations deliver health and human services.
Following the 2016 Presidential election, NASW delivered to the new administration and the 115th Congress a comprehensive transition document, Advancing the American Agenda: How the Social Work Profession Will Help. The document outlines priority areas where social workers play a significant role in addressing social challenges and advancing the broader American Agenda. Selected statements are featured here.

There are 4.1 million parents with disabilities raising children
under the age of 18 in their homes.
These parents might face obstacles in creating or maintaining families. If a
person with a disability wants to become a parent but requires assisted
reproductive technologies to achieve this goal, he or she might experience
barriers to access. If a person with a disability does have a child, he or she
may be met with discrimination within the child welfare system. Removal rates
for parents with a psychiatric disability may be as high as 80 percent; the rate
varies considerably between 40 percent to 80 percent if the parent has an
intellectual disability. Parents with
disabilities, and their families, need to be supported and protected in their
fundamental right to have a family.

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign via ScienceDaily
Fewer than half of parents of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities make long-term plans about who will take over their child's care if the parent or other relative providing care dies or becomes incapacitated, a new study suggests.
More than 380 parents — primarily mothers — of individuals with disabilities participated in a web-based national survey about planning for their children's care.

When it comes to mental health, there's still far too much miseducation and stigma around the issue — and those invisible barriers continue to create very real challenges for people when it comes to getting help. Fortunately, one state is enlightening its citizens by starting with kids. Beginning July 1, New York will become the first state to require mental health education be taught in all its schools.

U.S. life expectancy has fallen for the second year in a row as drugs, alcohol and suicide contributed to a public health crisis, a British medical study found.
