Find out how teens are using technology, specifically gaming and social media, in this two-part NASW Social Works Talks podcast series.
 - Teens and Video Games
Mike Langlois, MSW, LICSW, author of "Reset: Video Games & Psychotherapy,” is a gamer-affirmative therapist whose work focuses on gaming, social media, and the impact of social networks on relationships. Langlois encourages us to change our perspective of gaming and to understand that it can be very social in nature.
 - Teens and Social Media
Sean Erreger, LCSW, MSW, a clinical case manager for children and adolescents at risk of inpatient psychiatric hospitalization and/or out of home placement, suggests that social workers who work with teens should consider understanding the social media their clients use could be part of cultural competency.
On January 15, the New York State Legislature passed A.576/S.1046, legislation prohibiting licensed mental health professionals from engaging in efforts to change a minor’s sexual orientation. New York now joins 14 states and Washington D.C. in passing laws prohibiting the use of conversion therapy on minors. The NASW New York State chapter advocated for banning the practice and made multiple media appearances to raise awareness of the dangers of so-called “conversion therapy.”

The Hechinger Report
In 2014, schools had a new way to give students free breakfast and lunch, paid for by Uncle Sam. Instead of asking low-income families to apply for the meals, a school district could opt to give everyone free food if at least 40 percent of the student population was already on other forms of public assistance or fell into a needy category, such as being homeless or in foster care.

The Department of Homeland Security has announced new guidelines to track child marriages among immigrants in the United States.
While debates on immigration have focused on national security, and President Donald Trump's determination to build a wall along the southern border has resulted in a national emergency declaration, the new rules address a far lesser known immigration issue.

The New York Times
Under new guidelines to be released by the New York City Commission on Human Rights, the targeting of people based on their hair or hairstyle, at work, school or in public spaces, will now be considered racial discrimination. The change in law applies to anyone in New York City but is aimed at remedying the disparate treatment of black people; the guidelines specifically mention the right of New Yorkers to maintain their “natural hair, treated or untreated hairstyles such as locs, cornrows, twists, braids, Bantu knots, fades, Afros and/or the right to keep hair in an uncut or untrimmed state.”
