Once again, our nation is experiencing the horror of a mass shooting in a school. NASW grieves for the families of the 17 students and teachers slain at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. As discussed in NASW's social justice brief Gun Violence in the American Culture, gun violence is a public health crisis that impacts individuals and families from every culture, age group, and geographical area in the United States. NASW strongly urges President Trump and Congress to treat gun violence as a public health crisis, which would mandate public health officials around the country to develop coordinated strategies to significantly reduce gun-related deaths and injuries.
Student Advocacy Day, March 20; Social Work Advocacy Day, March 21
The Congressional Research Institute for Social Work and Policy (CRISP) is again holding events for social workers on Capitol Hill during Social Work Month: Student Advocacy Day on March 20, and Social Work Day on the Hill on March 21. Take this opportunity to have the voices of social workers heard and to request action on Capitol Hill. NASW CEO Angelo McClain and NASW Senior Field Organizer Dina Kastner serve on the planning committee for the CRISP events.
- Student Advocacy Day. Students from social work schools across the country and students of allied professions (including, but not limited to, public health, nursing, and psychology) are welcome to participate in Student Advocacy Day. Social work faculty, recent graduates, and early career professionals are encouraged to attend. Students will be scheduled to visit the office of the Congressional member representing the district that their school is in. Students also will visit the office of their local Congress member or the offices of members of the Congressional Social Work Caucus. Registration for the event is $25 (does not include lunch).
- Social Work Day on the Hill. Attend one, two, or all three events of the day-long program. Registration is free for each event, with the option to livestream the first two events of the day. The program concludes with a Congressional reception celebrating the contributions social workers have made, and are continuing to make, in the U.S. Congress and the federal government.

Use this brief new video, developed by the FrameWorks Institute and the National Center on Elder Abuse (NCEA), to communicate feasible systemic solutions to preventing and addressing elder abuse. The video is based on the FrameWorks Institute's reframing elder abuse research and recommendations. NASW provided input on the reframing elder abuse strategy as a member of the Reframing Elder Abuse Committee; the association also serves on the NCEA Advisory Board. An in-depth exploration of the reframing elder abuse strategy and application is the focus of a preconference workshop at the 2018 NASW National Conference in June.

Principals are critical to school improvement efforts, yet few studies aim to elicit their perspectives on what contributes to teaching, learning, and broader school improvement. The purpose of this mixed-methods case study was to elicit principals’ perspectives on (a) teacher and school staff needs, and (b) student needs, in an effort to uncover whether these perspectives are reflective of priorities emphasized in current expanded school improvement models, such as mental health, family engagement, out-of-school time opportunities, and other youth development and learning supports. Twenty principals from one school district participated in the study. Data were collected through an online survey and a follow-up phone interview. Results indicate that principals identified and described a range of both academic and nonacademic needs faced by their students, teachers, and school staff. In particular, mental health was identified by principals as one of the greatest student, teacher, school staff needs. These findings suggest that principals’ perspectives in this study were reflective of broadening priorities emphasized within current expanded school improvement models. The article concludes with implications for school social work research and practice, particularly in relation to school improvement and school mental health.

Every day, social workers across this country provide a wide range of services in increasingly complex environments without proper safety training. Unfortunately, too many social workers have been the targets of verbal and physical assaults, and, tragically, some have even lost their lives while performing their job responsibilities. NASW encourages social workers to review established guidelines for social worker safety and to support passage of the Social Worker Safety Act of 2017.
Access reports examining issues related to the work of social workers, including how to serve people who have complex needs and how public agencies and other organizations deliver health and human services.
Following the 2016 Presidential election, NASW delivered to the new administration and the 115th Congress a comprehensive transition document, Advancing the American Agenda: How the Social Work Profession Will Help. The document outlines priority areas where social workers play a significant role in addressing social challenges and advancing the broader American Agenda. Selected statements are featured here.
An estimated 702,000
children were found to have experienced maltreatment, with children under the
age of one most at risk.
Of the children and youths who were abused or neglected, an estimated
147,462 received foster care services. There were a total of 427,910 children
and youths in foster care and 17,188 young people who aged out of foster
care in fiscal year 2015. Furthermore, it is estimated that 1,580 children die each year due
to child abuse and neglect; however, most experts report that this number may
be much higher. The
effects of child abuse and neglect are as varied as the children affected:
Some children who have experienced trauma are resilient and show few, if
any, lasting effects; others experience intense trauma, which may affect many
aspects of their lives and last well into adulthood. It is essential that children
who experience trauma as a result of child abuse, neglect, and other acts of
violence receive proper support and services.

Chicago Booth Review
The proportion of the global population living on less than $1.90 per person per day has fallen — from 18 percent in 2008 to 11 percent in 2013, according to the World Bank. In the United States, however, the poverty rate has been more stubborn — 41 million people lived below the country's poverty line in 2016, about 13 percent of the population, nearly the same rate as in 2007.

In the United States, 115 people die as the result of an opioid drug overdose every day. This statistic, gathered as part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's work to understand and combat the current epidemic of opioid drug abuse in America, is even more startling when you compare it to figures from the last 20 years or so.
