Solving the Grand Challenges for Social Work requires that we strengthen social work's influence in the policy arena. Take this webinar for strategies that social work researchers and educators can use to translate and package research, to communicate effectively with policy audiences, and to partner for maximum impact. Webinar is sponsored by NASW, in collaboration with the Grand Challenges initiative of the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare (AASWSW) and Influencing Social Policy (ISP).
As a member of the Eldercare Workforce Alliance (EWA), NASW played a central role in developing EWA's issue brief, End-of-Life Care: Preparing the Eldercare Workforce, published in March. Increasing the number of health care professionals specializing in geriatrics, gerontology, and palliative care will improve health care delivery as we age and at the end of life. Ensuring that the entire health care workforce understands the basic principles of these specialties will also improve care. Learn about the role of the health care workforce serving older adults in end-of-life care.

Past traumas often have a significant impact as people age, creating challenges for older adults and for the family caregivers who support them. Learn about how to address these challenges by accessing a recording of a recent webinar, Trauma-Informed Care for Family Caregivers of Older Adults, produced by the Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA) and featuring NASW member Debbie Rosenwein. The JFNA Center for Advancing Holocaust Survivor Care, which is funded by the Administration for Community Living, recently awarded 30 new grants to enhance person-centered, trauma-informed care for Holocaust survivors and for family caregivers of survivors. NASW served on the review committee for the grant. If continued funding is approved by the federal government, JFNA will issue a request for new proposals this summer.

The practice of social work often involves treating and working with children. This Legal Issue of the Month reviews questions confronting social workers who must obtain consent to treat a child. In order to establish a proper foundation for treatment with a child, to avoid risk and to provide an opportunity for satisfactory professional results, it is necessary to have a sense of what consent is necessary and which resources to consult when there are questions. The issue of whether both parents must consent to a child's treatment is frequently raised by NASW members and has a many-layered response. The issue of whether a child may consent to his or her own treatment also has many facets. Identifying the rights of the child and of the parents and considering the levels of risk in providing treatment require an understanding of the legal landscape that surrounds the issue of consent. This Legal Issue of the Month summarizes key legal issues and provides information to assist in answering questions about obtaining proper consent to begin mental health treatment for a child.

Are you meeting the benchmarks in service that patients should expect of you? NASW practice standards and guidelines reflect current and emerging best practice trends and are a critical component of the professional social worker's toolkit.
This brochure highlights the social workers in the U.S. Congress who fight every day to advance policies that are congruent with the social work profession. Social workers' knowledge about human needs and behavior, services delivery, systems that affect individuals and groups, and the effects of public policy make them good candidates for elected office and good officeholders. NASW-PACE (Political Action for Candidate Election) is the political arm of NASW and works to elect social workers and others who support the values of the social work profession. Look for email alerts from NASW-PACE about NASW-endorsed candidates from your state or district.

Between a third and a half of people age 45 to 59 and a quarter of those 60-plus went without needed health care in the last year due to its cost, according to a troubling new survey from the West Health Institute and NORC at the University of Chicago.
"We were surprised by the magnitude of the findings," said Dr. Zia Agha, chief medical officer at the West Health Institute, a nonprofit applied medical research organization based in San Diego.

When it comes to fighting substance abuse, research suggests the company you keep can make the difference between recovery and relapse. Researchers have created an algorithm that sorts intervention program participants — who are voluntarily working on recovery — into smaller groups, or subgroups, in a way that maintains helpful social connections and breaks social connections that could be detrimental to recovery.

Gentrification can be hazardous to your health, according to a team of New York City researchers. Their recently published study finds that hospitalization rates for mental illness — including schizophrenia and mood disorders — are two times as high in displaced people versus those who remain in their neighborhood. It is one of the first U.S. studies to quantify the hidden mental health consequences of gentrification.
