NASW urges Congress and the White House to include much-needed safety provisions such as access to personal protective equipment (PPE) for social workers and other health care workers in the next COVID-19 funding package. It is imperative that employers not retaliate against social workers and health care workers for raising legitimate concerns about their personal safety while caring for patients with COVID-19.
NASW Social Work Talks Podcast
Rosanelly Garcia is a trauma social worker in the emergency room at Mount Sinai Hospital in Chicago. Hear her account of what it is like working in the ER during the coronavirus pandemic, from an increase in COVID-19 cases to patients dying alone, without family, in the ICU to the emotional impact on families and frontline workers.
Related Resources
The COVID-19 pandemic is inequitably affecting vulnerable and marginalized populations, such as individuals who earn low incomes; people of color; and those who are incarcerated, homeless, in foster care, over 65 (especially those in long-term care facilities), or undocumented.
Op-Ed by Joel L. Rubin, NASW Illinois Executive Director
Chicago Tribune
Communities United (CU) helps disconnected young people of color heal from the emotional trauma of living amid poverty and violence by taking action on issues of inequity through advocacy and organizing. CU knows from its work that young people are especially vulnerable during this time of crisis. We know that when young people take positive action, it empowers them. And empowerment is what helps to heal trauma.

In early April, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced revisions for telehealth place of service and modifier codes that allow clinical social workers to be reimbursed at the same rate for telehealth service as for an in-person service. The revised codes apply to telehealth services performed as of March 1, 2020, and will be in effect for the duration of the public health emergency.

During the COVID-19 crisis, states are leveraging the Medicaid program to expand health insurance coverage, respond to the health needs of individuals, and ease practice restrictions. These measures inform social work services, and they support efforts to minimize health risks for providers and clients. With varied responses at the state level, best practices are emerging and informing advocacy opportunities.
