Clinical social workers now can receive Medicare reimbursement for psychotherapy services provided via audio-only devices such as landlines during the COVID-19 public health emergency. Last week, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced this and other temporary rule changes and waivers to increase access to health care and mental health services for the millions of older adults who due to the pandemic cannot safely receive services in person. NASW has been advocating vigorously to include audio-only devices in the COVID-19 telehealth flexibility. Millions of Medicare beneficiaries, especially those in rural areas and those who have low incomes, do not have smart phones and/or reliable access to the internet.

| SOCIAL WORK ISSUES IN THE NEWS |
STAT
The U.S. entered a grim new chapter in the coronavirus saga with the recent deaths by suicide of two health care workers on the frontlines of the fight against COVID-19 in New York City: emergency medical technician John Mondello and emergency physician Lorna Breen.
Health care workers are well-trained to manage the intensity of a medical crisis. But few are equally comfortable managing its mental health aftermath, in themselves or in others. Even before the pandemic emerged, moral injury and burnout were rampant among clinicians. Coping with COVID-19 has magnified many of those challenges and added new ones with the reality of resource constraints.
